Sound Valuation
dear pals
you reckon if each setup could be valued roughly in monetary term? or just too subjective a matter to deal with or if you are not able to value the cdp selling rm10k up to rm10k thereabout of sound value, why pay rm10k then?
probably the valuation is always in your heart, when it comes to assessing some equipment as your potential toy, when you have a chance to audition setups of others et al would you have some valuation in mind? for instance the setup sounds rm50k (of course rough value eh!)
come on... honestly, i know it is in your heart so... how much you value your setups? or if not monetarily, what percentage of your investment layout (based on new prices though you could have bought some items preowned) has been realised or how much yet realisable? how much your friend's setup may be valued? emm...
**back to hard work, for another 11.5months to next cny eh!

Re: Sound Valuation
This is a subjective question. No definite answer.
Sound is abstract and therefore attracts many agruments. When we judge, we based on our own standards. After all, everyone is bais. Value a piece of equipment is even more difficult because it may be designed to synergise with own products. Hence, mating with others might not reach an optimum potential.
Valued a setup is more viable. So, you form a list of reference setup at various price range. Or you form a list of reference setup for specific music genre at various price range.
Value is also subjective to differernt people. Hi income earner may value diffrently from average earner. They value uniqueness, design, technologies and etc. One will buy the most expansive speaker if it is recogniseably expansive. The speaker has thus become a status symbol. Design will also play a role if wife is involved in the purchasing decision making. I bet red Avantgarde in the middle of the hall would have a low WAF. It will not blend into the decor.
It would be a different story if one have a dedicated playroom. You can have all kind of wierd looking stuff you want.
Just my humble thoughts.

Re: Sound Valuation
more precisely, we are talking about perception of sound value rather than sound valuation perse thus much subjectivity involved but then, it is still true enough that the perception of value is in our hearts as always!
when it comes to the perceived value of sound, we can be honest to ourselves or to others, or we can continue to cheat ourselves or others, we can bluff, brag et al... we can argue till the cow comes home... the subjectivity also has made huge room for much paradox in hifi i guess and thus egoism which goes along with symbolic social status etc et al
too much to write/discuss, though rest is more more prefered eh!
thanks for response

Re: Sound Valuation
You probably could write a dissertation on this topic & earn yourself a PhD along the way as well...

Re: Sound Valuation
maybe mgf could have his thesis assessed and there demands a panel of professors from various fields for which i could imagine these:
- sound engineering (production, mixing and reproduction)
- psychology (hifi marketing and consumerism)
- psychiatry (specialising in treating audiofools/audiofoolats)
never an exhaustive list, though none could be audiophile!
