Just curious how these amps perform. Have been looking at integrated amps from each manufacturer and trying to weight pros and cons. I currently run a Rega Elicit-R and thinking of going American.

Pass Int-150
Krell Vanguard
McIntosh MA 6600/6700

Krell/Pass/Mcintosh Empty Re: Krell/Pass/Mcintosh

Hi, recently I just been through similar thought process and actually posted queries on Audiogon to get feedback : Audiogon Thread, just that I was looking for power amp instead of integrated.

For your case, out of the three I have only heard the Mac MA6600. I think if you like more relaxing type of presentation, easy listening session, i think Mac overall does a good job. They are not too analytical, slightly to the warm side, and I especially like vocal sound from Mac, probably coloured, but I like it. But newer generation may sounds different. More neutral and transparent, but still overall they are more forgiving on the source and sound good on almost any kind of songs.

Im also using krell integrated 400xi, it is also good, more dynamic, tighter bass, and more solid bottom end. But i was told the 400xi is 'smoother / less agressive' among krell. The power amp that I have listened really gives you the endless power and drive your speaker to the max, fullest sound (i heard krell fpb600 / fpb450mcx). One hell of a power amp, but overall I prefer Mac over Krell.

Didnt have chance to listen to Pass.. have you heard those amp in person?

Hi, I have not auditioned the Pass yet. It was unfortunately not available yet in the country. Even the dealer was not keen in providing a price for the amp. I looked at the Jeff Rowland Continuum S2 which makes 400w at 8 ohms. Visually very good looking amp. Again, dealer did not have one set up for audition.

That's the problem with going high-end; not all brands/models you want to consider will be available for audition.  You will have to read a lot of reviews and make your own judgement.

I am happy with my McIntosh power amp but what makes big difference to the sound is the preamp.  I have changed preamp many times and eventually settled with a silver autoformer passive preamp.  If you have plans to upgrade in the future, go for separates (pre and power, not integrated).  Good preamps and power amps last very long time so you can consider buying used as well.

Hi Thina,

Don't mind me sharing ur posting.

Have been using a NAD integrated Amp for a long while and was thinking of moving on to a Naim int amp.... but this got blury as soon as i had a listen to a Krell 300il integrated...my ears tell me that the Naim has good handling on a faster notes and the Krell has more hold & laid back feel...both are on warm... side....do share views on both these amps....thanks in advance

Hi thina,
like everyone say don't mind me sharing r u considering buying new for the 3 models?
What kind of speaker u r using it to drive?
If u r considering buying used products why not go for pre power is more down to earth with more rooms for future upgrades.
Sorry if i have been rude with my words.

Hi Alfred,

I am currently using NEAT Acoustics SX1 speakers and driving them with Rega Elicit-R.

I am looking at purchasing second hand Pass Labs pre/power.

Hi Thina,
I reckoned the Neats will be best driven by Naims.. Heard em' (unsure which model but floor standers) and had that 'boogie factor' and toe tappin coming in naturally ...

Owned (and heard) a few iterations of Passlabs (pre-power) IMHO it may not suit the speakers..

My 2 sen (+ 3% get) worth

Hi,
NEATs and NAIMs are a natural pair. What speakers are best with Pass Labs?

hi Thina, i believe zeebee is right using Naims to match neat speakers is the best combo i heard no need to tweak it or spend lots of money on power management just buy a pre n power which give u around 150w per channel then add super cap to it n u have good sound.
Of cos this system will last u sometime but do u think u r that type of person who love to venture more on hifi n understand it on how to make it sound even better by just tweaking it a bit?
Like u ask how is pass lab i would say good on power amps but so so on the per section but u can always hook it up with a krell pre amp n listen for yourself n feel the music weather u like it or not.
