ML37 CD Transport

Closed-Loops, Jitter-Reducing CD Transport

The Mark Levinson Nº37 CD Transport is dedicated to performing one highly specialized task: to extract all of the digital information from a CD and relay it to a digital processor in its original form.

CD transport with four digital outputs, AES/EBU on XLR, S/PDIF on BNC, S/PDIF on RCA and ST optical.
The No.37's transport mechanism is a Philips CDM 12 industrial model, for which Levinson developed its own user interface. The laser mechanism uses an all-digital servo control system, and the transport itself is shock-mounted.

In conventional transport designs the reference clock is located near the laser mechanism; according to Madrigal, this noisy electrical environment contributes to jitter. In the No.37, this reference clock—a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator—is located in the final stage of the output section, with its own dedicated power supply. The digital output is stored briefly in a buffer and released in sync with the accuracy of the clock. This design is said to virtually eliminate jitter in the output signal.

Weight : 15kg
Dimensions: 15.75" W by 3.76" H by 14.3" D

ML36S DAC

Incredible build quality, design, and component selection. This is the S variant of the 36 which was much improved over the original.
Digital-to-Analog converter with HDCD decoding and 20-bit resolution.
Full dual mono internal construction for incredible balance and detailed channel separation.

The No.36S also makes use of Levinson's "smart FIFO (First In, First Out)" buffer, which re-clocks the incoming data with high precision to minimize jitter. Madrigal claims less than 20 picoseconds of jitter for the No.36S.

The No.36S also provides for HDCD playback though the inclusion of Pacific Microsonics' PMD100 HDCD, 24-bit throughput, 8x-oversampling HDCD decoder/digital filter chip. The 36S handles HDCD's inherent 6dB-lower level in its own unique way. Pacific Microsonics (who holds the HDCD patents) requires that HDCD processors decrease the level of playback for conventional discs, to match the level of HDCDs. Some processors do this digitally, which is not generally a sonically desirable way to change level—bits are literally discarded.
