Re: Your very first hifi!
I inherited my grandfather's Pioneer SA-900 Integrated amp, Akai Reel2reel deck and a custom Frankenstein turntable with a Shure MM cartridge. Speakers were also my grandpa's frankenstein job comprising an 18" Woofer on one speaker, a 15" on the other speaker with domes for midrange and horns for tweeters. Grandpa got the drivers from a friend who owned the Odeon cinema in Klang back then. Had the setup from the early 1970's until the late 1990s. When my family moved to Sabah in 1976, we shipped it over. But when we moved back to KL in 1997 we gave it all away.
When I got my first salary I bought grandpa a Sony discman, NAD 3020i and a pair or AR bookshelves. My most vivid memory of the Nad 3020i was the row of transistors clearly visible from the air vents on top of the casing. For whatever reason still unknown to me, the row of transistors lit up like a gas furnace one day when we were casually listening to music. It spewed blue and yellow flames! But strangely the music continued playing. We returned it to the shop but they could find nothing wrong with it so they returned it to us with nothing done. Did not dare push the Nad very hard after that day.

Re: Your very first hifi!
2 years ago i got myself a second hand MABR2 at RM800. End up I don't even know the price of amplifiers are never come cheap in the market.
After few weeks of daylight searching, I was lucky enough to hunt a secondhand gainclone(LM3886) at price of RM200.
But the sound is still very terrible, thus made my journey began.

Re: Your very first hifi!
Hi Bimmerman,
Most likely a lizard or cockroach got pass some high current circuit.. and got smoked not enough to kill the circuit.
And by the time to remove it to your repair shop, the carbon already broken into pieces... cant find any trace at all ..haha.
Damn, the NAD 3020i is 1 tough amp ah!

Re: Your very first hifi!
Hey Adrian, tough amp it surely was! But not much in the way of sonic muscle. Turning on the soft clipping power envelope thingy surely did put a damper on dynamics. I just left it OFF. Maybe that sealed box AR needed a bit more power to drive.
But later when I got a pair of B&W Solids, the Nad did a whole lot better! And why did I buy the B&W solids? Because of Star Audiophile lah! There was no internet at that time and Audiophile did a spanking review saying that these were larger than life. I was sold! To the good folks at The Star Audiophile, I salute you You have done us all a great service.
I also added a Cervin Vega 12" subwoofer to the combo and boy did the system rock!!!

Around that time, I was in Form 2 and had a scrap book of bassraptor's articles, and yes I remember that B&W Solid review from AudioFile's Thursday articles. He reviewed the Technics SL PS70 flagship CD player but all I could convince my father on was the younger brother SL PS50, from Current Connection in Atria (both now gone). Speakers were also from Current Connection, JBL TLX14 and amplifier was dad's 1976 Harman Kardon A401.
In terms of hifi bought with own money, this didn't happen until almost 2 decades later when I decided I could finally buy something 'agreeable' and relatively 'upgrade-proof' from the used market:
Source: Denon DCD S1
Pre: DIY passive
Power: Plinius SA50
Speakers: Maggie MG1.6QR
I still enjoy them very much and they have taken me on a journey of musical discovery.
AudioFile certainly shaped a generation of audiophiles.
