Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) Empty Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR)

Post by BrAvO Fri May 08, 2009 9:27 am

Hi all, after searching around Jalan Pasar for an AVR & went to the shop which Brad recommended too. I was told that almost 95% of the on shelf models are with 230V output with 3-5%+-. I am just wondering what is the most suitable output voltage to buy for our HiFi system usage? My equipments are with 220V & 230V input. What is the +- voltage a system can take in? scratch

I've called a distributor directly & he told me that their AVR is programmable to any output voltage you like so I would like to seek more info from all of you regarding of this matter before i proceed to get one from him.

Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) Empty Re: Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR)

Every electrical equipment is designed to be used to a certain voltage supply according to the particular country. For example Malaysia's supply voltage is 240Vac +5% -10% which means the TNB supply voltage can vary between 216~252Vac actually this is in accordance to IEC standard for nominal supply voltage of 240Vac so we cannot say TNB supply isn't precise on the dot of 240Vac. Now European countries are standardising their supply voltage to 230Vac +10% -6%. So if you buy a product manufactured in Europe, or for the matter of fact from any other country, manufactured after year 2008 with the CE or EN logo at the back, with a voltage specification of 230Vac, it will work perfectly well in Malaysia. However, if its a 220Vac specification you definately need an AVR because the tolerance is +- 6% only. You can buy an AVR accordingly, probably a programmable is better.

For your information, Malaysia has fully adopted IEC standard voltage 230V +10% - 6% since 2006, you can refer more in details in MS IEC 60038: 2006 (correspondence to IEC 60038:2002). Hence the single-phase and three-phase voltages shall be 230V and 400V respectively in lieu of 240V and 415V.

Thanks everyone for your comment.

i think i will ask the supplier to set the output at 225V +-3% so It will work perfectly with any 220-230v input devices.

Will it be any impact on sound by using "AVR" connected from wall power supply to a "Power Distributors"?
