High sensitivity speaker vs high output power amp
Fellow friends,
Wish to lead a discussion on these topics:
1. Is there any improvement to use high power amp like monoblocks on high sensitivity speakers (93db example) compare with just an ordinary amplifier?
2. Can we draw a conclusion that higher ohm speaker is easier to drive than lower ohm speakers?
3. If a speaker is rated at 6 ohm, which tap on the power amp output will yield a better sound? 4 ohm or 8 ohm?
TQ

Re: High sensitivity speaker vs high output power amp
1) high powered amp driving high db speakers will overkill
my friend's 96db speaker when using slightly higher power amp of 20w, sound can get very rough, but amps below 10w will sound very good.
those high db speakers are should be partnered with low powered amp such as class A or tube amps.
2) generally higher ohm speakers are easier to drive, i guess except for the 15ohm ls3/5a
3) either one can do, try listen yourself to get the best result

Re: High sensitivity speaker vs high output power amp
Hi Pakleng,
Thanks for yr information. But do you rate class A as low powered amp? I thought it is more powerful than class AB. Again how does these classes be categorized?
Wish to clarify. I have a pair of high sensitive speaker tannoy d700 of 93db, will I gain better sound if I use tubed power amp 100 watt to drive compare with 150 watt monoblock?
TQ

Re: High sensitivity speaker vs high output power amp
Class A has lower power than AB, but purer sound. A lot of amplifier has Class A & AB manual switching, when on AB mode, it is about 4-5x power than A and Class A runs very hot!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been using a 20 watter class A amp for many years, although not very powerful but when partnered with high sensitive speakers, it produces great sound quality, powerful sound and can shake the walls

I guess the 100wpc amp will drive your tannoy in full swing!
But which one sounds better will have to try it yourself because on paper alone is not enough to justify. Better do the real test.

Re: High sensitivity speaker vs high output power amp
Hello Pakleng,
I understand that we rate solid state amps into classes. Do we classify tube amps into classes as well?
Thanks

Re: High sensitivity speaker vs high output power amp
tube amps also have classes, very much like solidstate
most high end tube amps are using class A design, like the Kondo Ongaku, Gakuon etc.
