RM1300 upgrade: 3.1 or 5.0 system?
my current speaker 3.0:
front: small monitor audio r90hd
center: psb c1
which upgrade do you think can strain myself from future upgrade for at least one year
1-3.1 system, buy a subwoofer
2-5.0 system, buy a medium size bookshelf speaker.
usage 70%movie 30% music
thanks

Option 2. You'll probably find some good bargains at the forthcoming KLAVS in July.

Re: RM1300 upgrade: 3.1 or 5.0 system?
Ya, i know. And then i have to split up the portion, maybe 800 for woofer, 500 for surround. I think if i used the whole amount i might have better component even if its not fully HT enjoyable, later can upgrade. anyone with 3.1 or 5.0 system care to share their experience?

Re: RM1300 upgrade: 3.1 or 5.0 system?
This was the order which I did my AV.
1. Get good main speakers first (I was lucky a friend was working for the company which owns the local Boston Acoustics factory so I got BA front speakers at a good price).
2. Got a good center speaker (at that time was James Loudspeakers, 2nd hand)
3. Got a good surround amp
4. Got good cheap subwoofer
5. Got a good rear surround speaker
6. Got an SVS subwoofer
I was using just front and center speaker for a period and with the Boston which was a floor stander, the lack of low bass was mitigated by the mid-bass punch of the Boston. To me, while low bass is important for movies, good mid bass 'punch' and 'solidity' is even more important because we need them during explosions, gun shots, etc. The bulk of the impact from these sound effects and all those things like crashing boxes, punches in a fist-fight, etc, are centered mainly in the mid-bass region.
Note : I added the cheap subwoofer because it was available. I was actually already using some cheap edifier speakers for surround at that time.
Later Music Room in 1U had a closure sale and I got PSB speakers for surround at a great deal.
My SVS sub was the last upgrade to my AV system. It was the best sub I have found thus far for AV use. It goes to below 20Hz and is so powerful I can -feel- the subsonic bass.

Re: RM1300 upgrade: 3.1 or 5.0 system?
Here some simple step, since u already have monitor audio front (HD90) why not call and nego the link below -
http://www.hifi4sale.net/t17054-monitor-audio-hd90-mini-bookshelf-speakers-used?highlight=monitor+audio
http://www.hifi4sale.net/t15050-rogers-asb-100-mkii-active-subwoofer-used?highlight=subwoofer
Both deals is between ur budget, know u can used 2 same speakers for front and surround and for future upgrade u can buy monitor audio floorstand and used the HD90 in 7.1 set up...if u wanna still maintain to 5.1 set up u can invest monitor audio center speaker...its sound better when use full set of same monitor audio set up..its easy to achieve same sound balance and frequency.
hopefully it help...good luck

Re: RM1300 upgrade: 3.1 or 5.0 system?
Thanks man. Really helpful tip, adding the number of option.
3-5.1 system, buy a subwoofer and surround (fizi)
4-5.0 system, buy a floorstander. Used one within budget, new one have to fork out extra hundred ringgit perhaps (wongKN)
actually i bought my r90hd from that seller my previous system actually a 5.1 which you can look at selling thread.
still in standby mode, once i sold that system its time to act

Keep a very close eye on the for-sale forum. E.g. there's a pair of B&W floor-stander which just went on sale, starting price - RM1250....
