Owned one before a decade ago. A decent HT receiver with reasonable output power, but lousy dim lit touch screen remote control that was supposed to be state of the art in its time, perhaps best effective in the dark when viewing movies. Compared to better makes in the competition, it lacks some real oomph and grunt but if thats not a problem, then its entirely ok and would give the likes of Yamaha, Onkyo, Denon models in its time a good run for the money . This model was to compliment then hi-end Sony DVP-S7700 DVD player. It was supeceded by STR-DA777ES, which was a far better set in performance and features, performance edged out to some degree by Sony's flagship model TAE-9000ES and TA-N9000 combo. That was then. Sony don't make things like these anymore, now mostly compact and affordable HT in the box combos.

Sitizak, unsure of your budget but these days there r a lot to choose, especially if you want to start a decent HT system. I have one of these earlier Sony ES series amp/'processor' which, as cmboy mentioned were very well made but I think in terms of 'technology' r really out of date even compared with more recent low rung offering from Onkyo, Pioneer etc.
If you've somehow 'inherited' the amp, ie a freebie, then use it, otherwise suggest u check these pages or later at the oft mentioned KLIAV in July for latest offering n price
Word of caution though; these HT/AV amps are like handphones or other gadgets, most of the technology will be outdated by the time it hits your AV shelf. Check out some of the posts here too on some discussion/Q&A on AV/HT amp or receiver queries n good luck.

Outdated as with the decoding section only, latest Dolby and DTS standards by current trend not featured, most importantly if you're critical and have DVD or other media which insist on the latest sound effects for best performance, otherwise it'll be good for general intent and purpose. Having said that, its a 5.1 channel of a decade ago. Oh well, there's surely lots of people still using old Dolby surround receivers and not critical about owning the latest rig. Its entirely up to you on choice and what you're willing to pay.

Re: Sony DA50ES is good for beginner?
sitizak,
Sony DA50ES is good for beginner? Definitely if you primarily use DVD. Do not worry about latest format Dolby TrueHD AND DTS-HD MA if you not into bluray.
What is the lifespan for an amp? Sony ES (Extreme Standard) range of amplifier can last a generation, about 20 years of normal usage.
I have Sony VA8ES bought in 1997 or 98 is not only still alive but kick butt during action movies. My other amp TAF707ES is the same.
Hope these info helps...
