All Naim pre-amps are based on the same circuit. The internal layout is what sets them apart both physically and sonically!

The output gain stage is the same from 32 to 52. (I have not had an opportunity to have a look at a 12 or 22 but assume it will be the same too.) Resistor and capacitor values may have changed slightly but the basic circuit is the same.

The tape buffer circuit is the same for 32, 72, 102, 112, 82 and 52. The 42, 62 and 92 do not have tape-buffering circuitry. Once again over the years some resistor and capacitor values have changed slightly.

The input buffer is what separates the old and new Naim sound. The 72 was the first Naim pre with the `time-aligned filter' in the input buffer. The 102, 82, 112 and 52 use this input buffer too. (Resistor and cap values vary slightly here too, as the design has been optimised. The 102, 82, 112 and 52 share the same values and differ from the 72.) This filter is a third order design with a turn-over frequency well out of the audio range. (I can't remember off the top of my head what it is but if my memory serves me correctly it is around 150KHz.) The point though is not the `pole' frequency but rather the effect on the signal in the pass band. (Phase coherence, noise reduction etc.) The results are what you hear as improved low level detail, better focus, improved dynamics, improved timing etc..........

By powering each section of the pre-amp individually brings huge performance gains. (The NAC 52 demonstrates this exceptionally well!!) Performance gains will be had by powering a 32 in this way too and by adding the new input buffer, improvements should theoretically also be heard. (Not everyone agrees on this point though.)
I would like to state at this point though that a NAC 52 equivalent will not be the end result of a tweaked 32 as the 52 has an infinitely superior board layout and grounding arrangement. It is also based on a dual-mono construction, one PCB for the left channel and one for the right channel.
All of the newer pre-amps have revised and improved PCB layouts giving improved sonic performance.
I would also like to mention that although the basic circuit has remained the same, the small tweaks in resistor and capacitor values do bring subtle improvements. (This comes, as the design is refined.) This together with the PCB layout improvements have quite noticeable sonic benefits. (What is more important than the circuit design is the specific application thereof!!!)

i sold my Nac42. I also have another good nac42.5 for sale.

and not forget the Nac32[king] also waiting for new owner.

however,i looking trade for harberth speakers..any one of you keen are welcome...

Those of you who have not got CB version,think that again as this is what Naim had setup its reputation.

Forget the Harberth.....I am Looking Naim Allea this time. [If D25 has gone]..

Proac D25 couple with Nap135...any one heard b4?? Can rock & Roll very well i think if pair up with Nac32 acting as pre..

Nac32 meditating long enough...looking new Naim Kaki la...Nac72 with upgrade cards tremendously sings song out of box..in my experience No need to go for 82 anymore,next target is Allea lor !
