"Pop sound at speakers" when switching off preamp
Afternoon,
Speakers put out a "soft pop sound" when switching off system.
Can anyone advice what is causing this problem?
Shut down step as follow;
Pre Amp "Volume down/mute" => CDP Off => Power Amp Off => Pre Amp Off, and follow by "soft pop sound"
Have try many sequence above seem to be the softest way to shut down system.
Thanks.

Re: "Pop sound at speakers" when switching off preamp
Hi Hijau
The Rule:
Power amp turned ON LAST, only after turning on everything else first.
Power amp turned OFF FIRST, before turning off anything else.
Some systems do make small gentle "plop" sounds... it is quite normal. If it does not sound gentle, then get someone suitable to come take a look at it.

You may listen to some gentle plop sound, something like water flowing sound. It is actually DC discharge from caps from your power amplifier.

Why amps doing DC discharge with pop sound?
Hey, this sounds like my Exposure XX amp.
Have the pop sound sound when turn on and off.
Turn on will get instant pop.
Turn off will get pop sound after few seconds.

it sound like a sticky relay... or leaky condenser. but if follow kowtim rules for last on 1st off for power amp. you shouldnt have any problem..be patient, turn on pre some time onlt turn on power amp
and turn off power amp some time only turn on preamp. the power amp has reservoir capacitor which can store power for few second and some big giant can store for minutes..

Well, I guess there will be no alternative for integrated amplifiers with those pop sounds, right?

Re: "Pop sound at speakers" when switching off preamp
I found some useful info with Google why pop sound generated~~
http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Uk/uk.rec.audio/2006-03/msg00706.html
Basically, the pop is caused by the amplifier stabilising when
switched on. Amplifiers with split supply rails and no output capacitor will not necessaily come up totally symetrically, so some out-of-balance current will flow through the loudspeaker, causing a pop. Amplifiers with a coupling capacitor will have the capacitor charging current going through the loudspeaker, causing a pop. There may be a similar pop on switch-off.

Thanks all.
Will try out some of the method share on above will feed back later.
My other concern will this cause any permanent damage to speaker?

I think it will be ok as long as no DC current flow through speaker and the pop sound is not loud, for your information Naim amplifier has pop sound from speaker every time when turn on or off~~

Re: "Pop sound at speakers" when switching off preamp
dear all,
I just got my new Naim amp and notice that it does produce pop sound when turn on and off. I can't follow any sequence fr shutting off as the pre-amp does not have any on/off as it draws power from the power amp.
Does all Naim amp produce the pop sound and is it normal?
