Break-in Period for Speakers
buying a new pair of speaker especially that cost heaps of money does trigger lots of excitement
especially when u put high confidence after hearing or listening for demos b4 deciding on buying
but.. they said 'there is breaking period' for these hi end speakers regardless the conventional bookshelf type, floorstander, full range etc
so.. is this true?
how many hours of breaking_in & what are the 'do's & dont's' ?
when do you actually notice differences in SQ during these periods?
how did burn voice coil happened? sound scary though.. ermmm

Re: Break-in Period for Speakers
The breaking period improvement always different from speaker to speaker but normally the speaker will reach "what it should be" performance after 48 hour of continue burn in(if vacuum tube amplifier user please do not on it continuous over 6~8 hour) normally with some factory's demo cd or burn in cd, but with a balance amount of high, mid, bass songs or music will be good to be use to avoid imbalance break in of tweeter and woofer
After 1 month the speaker normally has been fully break in (every day use), but some say speaker normally reach optimum performance after one year
While break in firstly do not play it too loud, with normal listening volume will be ok, if you want be faster also can crank up the volume slightly over normal listening volume but do that only after 48 hour of break in
Normally voice coil burning because of over powering or DC current flow over the voice coil and heat up to burn the coil

Re: Break-in Period for Speakers
First thing I would suggest is to check with the speaker's documentation (i.e. owners manual). Some speakers, in fact almost all high end speakers (and equopment for that matter) comes with a manufacturer break-in period. E.g. Apogee Centaurs used to come with an advice to run in the speaker for 100 hours before optimum sound is obtained. The break-in procedure is varied. Most people just play with as wide a variety of music as they can find, for the reason of balanced break in as suggested above. But then, if one's main diet of music is say vocals, there is no reason why one cannot run in the speaker so that it works fine with vocals (whether there is such a thing is open to debate). The only sure thing is one -must- run in a new piece of hi-fi equipment. In fact, my experience is that even a used piece, if not played for a long period of time, also benefits from run-in as well.

Re: Break-in Period for Speakers
...or use one of those "burn in tracks" from the XLO / Sheffield Lab / Reference Recordings Test CDs that play pink noise and tells you to just let it run 48hrs non stop.
But the noise is terrible so it is only practical if u got a separate listening room and keep the door closed.
Otherwise, just play some nice ambient music and let it run over and over.
Personally, I'm not too bothered about rushing in to run in anything. Just normal usage alone will run it in already so might as well just enjoy the music at the same time.

Re: Break-in Period for Speakers
Yeah agree to WongKN an old proac tablette 3 singature i brought last month did improve after sometime of use, totally a new experience for me to "re-break in" a used speaker
But i dont like to use special signal to break in (but i agrees it to break in the speaker balance and shorten the break in period) because i feel that the system sound "cool and emotionless" to me after those noise signal, but after few day of normal music it will back to normal, so normally i do like to leave it repeat playing high dynamic instrument tracks in low volume~~

fizi : cheap2 one
i just one to make sure, i'm doing the right thing
i did blew up my one of tannoy tweeters last time,
but this time its full range, no tweeters, but still need to run in
as now i notice the bass is pretty tight
perhaps after a while it will loosen a bit
