Townsend Siesmic Sink repair Empty Townsend Siesmic Sink repair

Greetings to all,
This was quite popular some years ago. Quite effective design.
Main problem: air leaks after couple of years use.
I chucked it away years ago. Recently decided to see whether it can be repaired.
Opened it up and was surprised to find that the designer used just an ordinary 20" bicycle inner tube!
Just replaced with good quality bicycle inner tube, and it is good again.
Note:
1. The glue used originally to stick the tube to the upper plate will be dried (powdery) up by now. So wear mask when you open the plate.
2. Original tube was bent so that the nozzle faces out. I just use the tube without bending it so that it lasts longer. A bit difficult to refill air when needed. Otherwise perfect.
3. If you buy the right size tube, do not have to glue it. Just fit it tight around the wooden guide block. No chemicals used.
Just to share.
Low cost sustainable solution.
Cheers and good luck.

Hi Timurmusicman,
Good of you to give tips on DIYing the Townsend sink repair. Actually I have gone through the same phase that you did. Replaced the tube and Bob is your uncle! Thought that I was the only one who'd done that. Very Happy

There are no screws to undo on my unit. How did you open it up?

tweakman,
No screws in the first place. The sandwich is secured with glue between the two metal plates & the rubber tube. if your sink leaked, just prise open. Just like Timurmusicman wrote...practice caution as the glue becomes powdery after ageing. In our weather and humidity... something Mr. Townsend cannot imagine and should have worked with tropical R&D team. Probably he thought it was not worth it in the first place. Very Happy

Thanks Brother Zul for quick and accurate reply.
Just prise it open with a big screw driver.
Correction about tube size: 16" not 20". sorry for wrong info.
16" you just slide it in around the guide block and place the top plate on the bottom plate. No screws and no glue (yucks).
With 20" tube, you can fold it and glue it so that the nozzle sticks out. Convenient, but hardly worth the bother and probably cause faster damage to the tube. Here is picture of the dismantled unit.
Good luck,

Further DIY,
Anyone experimented with other combinations other metal plate sandwitch?
Marble or MDF?
Improve results?
