I believe it depends on what type of device you are using to stream. For example, laptop does not require a DAC whereas Apple TV or Android TV box does require a DAC

I am using the Google Chromecast Audio to stream from Spotify (Premium) and Tidal Hifi.
You can use a 3.5mm to stereo RCA to amplifier or a minitoslink to a DAC toslink input. I am using the 2nd method for better sound quality.

The newer Chromecast 2 does not have a audio output except for the HDMI output. So it is device dependent

I use it through a iPhone5 connected to the Marantz CD 6004 usb input. It beats the sound quality coming through my amp with a mini DAC connected to the Mac.

My present connection: iPad Bluetooth to outboard Bluetooth receiver and rca into my integrated amplifier with satisfactory results. Is there a better connection? Thanks.

I plan to have this :-

Laptop -> bluetooth receiver with RCA out -> DAC -> int. amp.

Just wondering DAC is needed here.
