These were designed by robin marshall, founder of epos, just before leaving monitor audio to start epos. The similarities are there to be seen.
Same tweeter, same cabinet bracing, same design of bass unit, albeit a bigger one than the es14.
The finish to the cabinets though, is in another league and this was reflected in the price of the day with the es14 selling for £299 and the 852 selling for £369.
I worked for a dealer at the time these two dominated the mid price speaker market. The 852 was seen as a highly viable alternative to the epos, yet time has remembered the es14 and forgotten these gems.
I owned both speakers in their heyday and came to strongly prefer the 852s. Both really sang with naim amps, both produced real, breathing musicians in your room. The epos though, refused to work with lots of kit, were far too fussy about placement, having to be moved for different recordings, and punished all but the most outstanding recordings.
The 852s, hit all the heights of the es14, but worked well with a range of items and recordings. They were also totally consistent once placed
