Thanks Mugen for pointing this. Recall some of the syllabus surrender back to lecturer last time.

Anyway, the data is transmitted using frequency, using frequency-shift keying... never in the discrete block we see, which is basically the encoding only..

actually its in discrete blocks, if u go and Google up a typical pattern for Bi-phase mark code. Basically you will need double the bandwidth to carry a given payload.

Now, back to the matter at hand is how "clean" and how timely can the discrete square waves be transmitted. Hence jitter and noise degradation comes into play here.

Hi Mugen,
Yes, the encoding is illustrated in discrete block. but when transmitting it, it is done through frequency just like analogue... As explained in frequency-shift keying...

Anyway, if it isnt... do correct me. Thanks.

i'm a bit puzzled. jitter and noise degradation come into play in the connection (usb or others) between digital player and dac.

but between external hard disk and digital player?

you are correct . a cable or optical link will never truly carry a perfect square wave signal. Hence the "analog" portion of any signal carrying medium.

So even if the modulation is by frequency shifting, there is always an "innacurate" element to the freq shifting. hence this gives rise to jitter and noise problems.

I am using WireWorld Starlight USB. I am satisfied with the sound quality. Other famous USB cables are Furutech, Audioquest Carbon,Coffee and Diamond, Zonotone and Transparent.
