1.CHRISTOPHER SIMPSON (1605 - 1669) - The Four Seasons (Atma Classique Audiophile - Made in Canada)
Instrumentation :
Soloist : Sussie Napper & Margaret Little (Lead Viol & Bass Viols)
with an Ensemble Cast of Jay Bernfeld (Treble Viol),Mike Fentross (Theorbo Lute)
Reijien Poirier (Organ)
That Christopher Simpson (c. 1605-1669) in his 4 Seasons was capable of imagining the exquisite turns of phrase, the tasteful succession of figures, and the larger relationships that make up the music's structure, is already a small miracle. That he was able to write them down in a fashion that would allow them to be played again was a formidable feat. And that in playing them, these musicians can give us the illusion that they are being improvised as we listen, is a source of wonder.
2.CLAUDE DEBUSSY (1862-1918) - Melodies de Jeunesse (Atma Classique Audiophile - Made in Canada)
Soloist : Donna Brown (Soprano Vocal) , Stephen Brown (Piano)
Brown has been hailed as a remarkable interpreter of Art Song and has sung in over 100 recitals throughout the world,
clear articulate and warm, Brown's tackles every recital with impeccable finesse found in mid registers, accompanied
by pianist Stephen Brown's exquisite touch on the piano.Highly Recommended.
3.JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (1685-1750) - Arias & Oboe D'Amour (Atma Classique Audiophile - Made in Canada)
Soloist : Daniel Taylor (Countertenor) and Bruce Haynes (Oboe D'Amour)
Ensemble : Scott Metcalfe (Violin Solo), Helenne Plouff (Violin), Christine Moran (Viola), Susie Nappier (Cello),
Pierre Cartier (Double Bass), Rejean Poirier (Organ and Harpsichord).
This release is basically a showcase for two outstanding Canadian specialists in baroque music, Countertenor Daniel Taylor and oboist
Bruce Haynes. The centerpieces of the disc are Bach arias for alto with obbligato oboe d'amore (a slightly lower-pitched version of
an oboe, rather like the modern English horn). Qui sedes" from the B Minor Mass and the eager "Saget, saget mir geschwinde" from
the Easter Oratorio. Also included are two cheerful, charming oboe concertos (actually transcriptions back from harpsichord concertos
that evidently originated as works for a melody instrument such as oboe or violin).Taylor definitely has a light lyric voice which is
quite rare n today's tenors.
4.HENRY PURCELL (1659 - 1695) - On The Muse's Isle (Atma Classique Audiophile - Made in Canada)
Soloist : Daniel Taylor (Countertenor) with Ensemble Da Sonar
Atma Classique premier's its new star Daniel Taylor,
via the release of the vocal and instrumental work of english composer and organist Henry Purcell.
The talented young Canadian Daniel Taylor is another in the impressive crop of countertenors now coming to prominence. His pure,
light voice has a slight vibrato and a natural-sounding timbre; while his lowest notes seem underpowered, his upper range is clear and unconstrained. It's a small voice, certainly, but very likable within its limits. For his solo debut recording, Taylor has selected some of Purcell's best-known songs, including "Music for a while," "O solitude," and "Fairest isle." He has chosen well: these relatively subdued
items call for the gentle delivery and musical subtlety that are his strengths without requiring more volume or drama than he can
comfortably deliver. Included alongside the songs are several of Purcell's trio sonatas for strings, exquisitely played by the Montreal
period-instrument ensemble Da Sonar.
5.FRANZ SCHUBERT (1797 - 1828) / JOHANNES BRAHMS (1833 - 1987) - German Mass/3 Motets (Hanssler Classic - Made in Germany)
Soloist / Ensemble : Rupert Huber / Sudfunk-Chor Stuttgart
Rare accapella performance from the romantic period, led by Rupert Huber and Sudfunk Choir of Suttgard, a radical but harmonious
approach to the period of the romantic age in classical music, which also includes works of other great romantic era composers such
as Franz Liszt and Anton Bruckner, extremely lyrical record tackled with much nuance, sounds just superb on tubes!
6.LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1770 - 1827) - Christ in the Mount of Olives/Mass in C Major (Hanssler Classic - Made in Germany)
* This is a 2 CD SET
Cast : Maria Venuti (Soprano), Katherine Von Kampen (Soprano), Ingeborg Danz (Alto),
Keith Lewis (Tenor), Michel Brodard (Bass) Bach Collegium of Stuttgart led by conductor Helmuth Rilling.
Ace conductor Helmuth Rilling leads Bach Collegium of Stuttgard on this very modern interpretation of the sacred work of Beethoven;
Christ in the Mount of Olives (Christus am Olberge), This oddball oratorio receives another fine modern recording, via Riling's Baton.
On the new record Maria Venuti is a little shrill at will manages the coloratura well enough, there is less sense of the unearthly spirit which this should express, bringing consolation to Jesus in his agony in the Garden. Michel Brodard sings Peter levelly and with a good deal of sensitivity, Keith Lewis portrays a Christ more forlorn in his loneliness as the disciples fail to watch with him, responding sensitively to Huber’s far-from-distinguished text and phrasing the music with great understanding.
If it is a less majestic interpretation, it is a very sympathetic one. Lewis is also much helped by Helmuth Rilling, who draws an excellent performance from his Stuttgart forces. The players respond warmly to his lead, and he even manages to rescue the soldiers from their
opéra-comique associations...There is much to admire in what Lewis and the supportive Rilling bring to the work, This is a 2 cd Set which combines Helmut Rilling's Mass in C Major which features the same cast, stellar session, well worth your dough.
