A 2011 H4S Awards debut?

Hi guys!
Year 2011 coming to a close...Merry Chritmas & Happy New Year to all! etc...*hic*
Was reading a hifi magazine and it was featuring the customary end of the year 'Awards' thingy. Got me to thinking, that maybe we, at HF4S, can do our own awards 'show' too? yes? no? Mr Administrator?
Have a Best CDP, TT, Amp, Speakers, Accessories, Cables etc.categories. All stuff which are available in Bolehland. Voting system? All for the purpose of getting to know what we have and how highly we rate an equipment? What, how, why.....Mr Moderators?? What say all? What's good after 5 whiskey shots? Coffee? Go for broke? Help?

Smashing idea old chap... damn fine suggestion... whiskey on you bro! I do know of a good pub with good prices and some good classic concerts in DVD....

This can help spice up the forum a lot. This can be done in the form of a member's vote on "what is the product or event or occurrence in 2011 that in a member's opinion is most important or impressive". We can do it in stages : first stage is for nominations where members who wants to nominate a product, event, etc will post it here together with justifications. After a period of time, say a month, we then gather all of them together to do a vote, either to set them in order, 1-10 or maybe just to vote for the top three. This keeps things simple and offers max fun to everybody.

There is only one cavert and that is this has to be run more or less on its own and monitored by members. Due to workload schedules, I am now only able to check h4s very very rarely, once a day and often maybe once a few days. So if there are anything which requires moderator/admin action, perhaps someone will need to PM either one of us or else it could go unnoticed for some time.

To start off then, nominations shall officially start now. So, all members, submit your nomination for the most momorable, or important, or impressive product or event or happening for 2011. I propose we initially limit one submission to each member.

If we want to do the awards thingy, are we doing it in jest or seriously?

Maybe not this year, but if you're serious about equipment awards, to be fair to all stakeholders (brands, distributors, resellers, potential buyers, readers), we must have a team of reviewers who are willing to understand the design intent and to play with the equipment for a while (eg, at least 2-3 weeks). Anyone willing to step up to the game, willing to spend time & effort to be a good reviewer?

It's easy to be a casual reviewer, but it would not be fair to the stakeholders. A good review is an article that is not intended to give an absolute pronouncement of equipment performance, since the reviewer's listening biases, music preferences, listening environment, equipment matching and understanding/knowledge of the manufacturer's design philosophy play key roles in the outcome of the review. Sometimes, trying to be a good reviewer can be pretty demanding and at times, frustrating, especially when you feel that circumstances may not allow you to provide a complete picture of the performance envelope of the equipment in for review. Just ask our fellow forummer, bassraptor, about this (by buying him a teh tarik or two...hehe).

Instead, what we can expect from a good review is to deliver greater insight all the variables peculiar to a reviewer's environment, tastes and body of knowledge. The reader can then make his/her informed opinion and act accordingly.

Actually I thought it was supposed to be on a more personal basis. I.e. to each forumer, what was that single product, or event, that made the most impact to him or her this year. As this is personal, we therefore are free from the constraints of having to be comprehensive (how can we try to judge the new exotic hifi that was launched this year, like the K'tema ?). E.g. how can we ensure we can be comprehensive ?

But by clearly qualifying that we are only limiting to what we - forumers in H4S - are exposed to over this whole year, we then remove ourselves from this constraint. Similarly, it is important to see this as personal and having fun. I.e. what most floated my boat this year ? I would say it is the revival of vinyl in Malaysia, with events like the CMY Sg Wang branch now dedicated to all things vinyl, lots more people selling vinyls in the KLAVS, and several forumers here getting into vinyl. Plus a healthy and respecful discussion about TTs and vinyl. So that is what floated my boat and it is personal to me. I do not put in judgement other than personal and what I left out does not imply that they are lesser.

Of course, we can always carry this in other ways. All up to the forumers themselves to decide. Over to you guys then.

Best GBC (Geographically Based Community) of the Year- NSAG! Their great endeavors, hijinks, code speaking, tube rolling, 3/5A staking, inspires others (?), gets people's blood boiling (??), which makes interesting reads (and yea, I'm f***ing bias!)

Most Interesting HF4S Discussion Topics/Post- Vinyl or CD, Subwoofer Discussion(Originally From NSAG thread) & What Are You Listening Right Now? And of course, why we are here, the Audio & Video Equipment for Sale (Malaysia & Singapore)- Tie

I don't think that the awards should pander towards to much commercialism such as naming a retailer for their new shop etc.

For this so call 'Awards' sake, why dont you put a category to it. And it shall be named. And I agree with you too.

Good idea, could we call it the

'TAKE A BOW & THANK YOU' cathegory...but it should not be limited to only one person. Our hififorsale forum is really blessed by many who are kind and give concrete information that means something. I'm here browsing more everyday, altho i belong to a few other forums, i don't go there as often as i do here. I think many others feel the same way, and there must be a way to reward this, in the awards cathegory.

I do agree to all your award recommendations. As for the late Uncle Vic, I didnt have the pleasure to meet him but reading on the postings about him, he must be a very fine gentleman in this hobby.

Maybe a TT session dedicated to him should be organised.
