Passive X over project
Hi All i am considering building a passive 3 way X over following a JBL model.
There are lots of components - especially coils which i anticipate will be tough to source locally, so will probably need to get from abroad.
Any body with any experience in this area?
Its a 3313 model X over that i intend to build.

Re: Passive X over project
Hi Highcut,
I think most of the passive parts (caps, resistors) can be sourced locally - Octave Electronics have a good stock of values and brands. They are good people to deal with.
Inductors may be sourced from the net or custom locally. Partsconnexion.com, erse.com, parts express, farnell, rs, e-bay, etc. depending on your choice & budget.
My experience in building passive crossovers has been a mix-bag. After spending a fair sum on rebuilding a passive for my DIY Altec VOT speakers (different brands of caps - film, paper-in-oil, teflon; different resistors brands - dale, mundorf, mills; different coils - custom, erse), I finally settled on a DIY 2-way active crossover.
Of course, having a tri-amp would be an expensive alternative (additional amps, active crossover, cables, etc.), but I personally can't imagine myself going back to a passive crossover in my current set-up.
Maybe getting Wikin's help and/or advice? He is currently doing good work on a tri-amp active crossover.

Re: Passive X over project
I'd second Mthoi's suggestion. Most of my DIY, i source components from Yap or Helen at Octave. They are very nice people to deal with. Also, if they don't have what you want, they usually are very helpful to me to suggest other sources or order from the net for me if i am too lazy to order myself.
Any idea what specification caps or inductors you need?
Bal.

Re: Passive X over project
Thanks Bal and mthoi for yr thoughts, i am much obliged
Perhaps i can get parts locally after all:)
Ideas still fluid at the moment - it will either be the 3133 (L300) or the LX6A plus the N8000 (converts to 3 way) but whatever i settle with it'll be a passive over .
I will talk to them at Octave

Re: Passive X over project
Hi
For xover mod, do observe the capacitor polarity, it does influence the sound.
Refer to the link,

Re: Passive X over project
If u are interested in xover design, then u should get an analogue active xover first. The reason is that with the mention device, u can change the xover cut off frequency easily and find the optimum setting for your JBL. After that u can design your own passive xover. U can google a lot of stuff especially in DIY website, they have all the tools in designing xover. From xover orders, type and even components to use.
