Re: Marantz cd6004
Noeljs,
I do not own a CD6004 but have been using several Marantz CD players from the 63 series to the 6000, 6001 and 6002.
I believe the CD6004 have the similar sound characteristics like the previous models - luscious, focus and detail for the vocals but not overwhelming the overall presentation of the music. This model however does have an upgraded power supply, transport mechanism and DAC.
Being a Marantz, I am sure it is not fussy to match other non marantz amp. I have used my previous Marantz CDP with Marantz, Musical Fidelity and Yamaha amps and it can easily blend in.
Audiolab however have a neutral and bright sound to me. Careful matching is required to ensure the brightness does not overwhelm the overall music.
These are my hearing observation. Do take it with a pinch of salt and go for a demo of both units.

Re: Marantz cd6004
The latest Audiolab is 8200CD, are you refering to this current model or an older one?
If there's one thing good about Audiolab is its build quality far exceed any of those entry Marantz models. But there's a price to it and not exactly cheap. The last time I heard it, it was bright, quite brash and dynamic. Far different from any of its previous models, because its a totally new design from scratch, save for its looks.
The one I heard was a demo model but no idea how long its already run in. Anyway, you better audition it for yourself and see if you like it.

Re: Marantz cd6004
I have both Marantz CD6003 and Audiolab 8200CD. Both are totally different breed with the later cost double. However, both served different purposes for me and I'd like them both.
