horns have very high efficiency. But their dispersion/radiation pattern & distortion figures are inferior compared to line (ESLs, Planar, ribbons, etc) or concentric radial (aka normal dome tweeters) designs.

As with everything in hifi ... its always a compromise and up to the designer to choose what kind of technology to use in their designs, and the consumer to choose which technology to buy and put in their homes.

Hi mugenfoo,
What i gather so far is: there is to this date 3 main types of speaker design : 1)concentric radial 2) line 3) horn ?
Mind sharing more about the line & horn ? I recently was given nice treat by 2 friends to sessions with ESL (quad 57 & 63pro), must say it is what I gauge as the best so far in my experience in terms of transparency, detail, life like. Question:- how is the sound of Planar & Ribbon ? Also, how is horn compared say ESL ? Many brand of horn speakers too ? Sorry if too general, will take some time to surf too, if info from true experience will be much appreciated.
thanks in advance

Horns: those P.A. loud hailers at election rallies.

Cones: the usual round tweeter that kids love to poke with their fingers.

Planar: Magneplanar.

Ribbon: MBL (looks like a lantern or some say "bomb"), Infinity IRS series, Apogee, ... etc etc.

Electrostatics: Quad ESL XXX (damn good lullaby machines.. yawn! ), Martin-Logan.

There are cheap horn type speakers, and there are expensive horn type speakers.

There are cheap dome type speakers, and there are expensive dome type speakers.

There are cheap planar type speakers, and there are expensive planar type speakers.

There are (not so) cheap electrostatic type speakers, and there are expensive electrostatic type speakers.

Hi. I agree you should seriouly consider horn speakers because even in low powered amp , they allow music to flow and breath easily, but make sure they are well designed.Unfortunately the good ones may be rather expensive. After you are done with the speakers, you can consider tweaking the audio note amp such as changing the coupling capacitor to AN silver cap, changing the driver tube to the rather inexpensive NOS clear top Shuguang 6n8p= 6sn7.it is a good sounding tube for vocal ,good isolation foots,Herbie's Hal O damper for the driver tubes etc These are some of the stages I have gone thru to achieve musical nirvana

Ahhh.. but i should also add on .. for those who either do not have the "deep pockets" or have it, but are "unwilling" to splurge .... this all can also be more than compensated with "imagination, knowledge & experience". Well and fine.

But the issue of moolah cannot be ignored. Which brings tho the philosophical second point:

To know, experience & acknowledge "Audio Nirvana" is open to anyone with an open mind ( all sour-grapes type of people excluded of course).

But here's the punchline .... to OWN "audio Nirvana" .... now that's gonna cost you a pretty penny. (again, all sour-grapes and self-deceiving individuals excluded of course).

of course "horny" is not an expression for any kind of sound. Just a play on words. And Horny doesn't need to have any sexual connotations either.

If its a sonic description, maybe "Honky" could be one ... but then again, some people might think this would be referring to people from Hong Kong.

Anyway , i also have a set of Horn speakers that maybe 90% of the people here would have either not heard of it, or have forgotten about this brand already.

I could sit in front of the large klipsch speakers driven by 300b parallel SET for easily more than an hours of listening. I don't own such setup. But I could walk over from my house to this fren's (a lady audiophile) for a listen, sometimes I get invited too, especially to check out some irregularity in the sound which she encountered and can't place a finger on it.

Why horn speakers? I_icon_minipost by wabun on Sun Oct 18, 2009 10:34 pm

but I have one fren using Isophon ( old german speaker ) with
Darling ( 0.75W ) single ended, DIY paradise DAC , Marantz CD63
and twisted pair telephone wire. this set sound much better (to me)
it mayb cost an interconnect for an hardcore audiophile

I have listened to this setup b4, in fact many times. It has a pretty flat audio spectrum, at least to my ears, this could account for the fact u find it so nice sounding. But individual requirements may be different among audiophiles. I'm sure many tube heads will agree with u. I've brought frens to go listen, though they like the sound, they still revered back to their own systems for the ultimate 'shiok' factor. So it's a preference actually. can't say they are wrong in not appreciating fine good sound or not able to recognise fine good sound when they come across one.

Why don't u review this setup in your blog? May interest many tube lovers here.

Hi uncle Vic / Wabun, I have not heard those vintage horn yet. Tried Loth X b4 pair wth A.N OTO amp..effortless vocal, great detail. But when high peak vocals came in.. it just 'deaf my ear' for a while..is kind of like someone shouting loud nxt to your ears..damn it..it hurts !! Why horn speakers? Icon_pale But some say, to get a good result you must not be pair wth ' aggressive amp ' e.g audio note type..bright sounding one.. how true is true dude??
So, for all those low power amp I mean 2 watts to 10 watts...what spk to match ??? S.O.S

best,

One question - how well horn speaker is at high, low, mid and details?

The horn speakers I saw is actually a single driver. So kinda makes me wonder what about the performance mention above.
