Signet Sl-280 B/U (Black/Utility)
Speaker design: 2 way rear ported in quasi 3rd order alignment.

Drivers: seas 1" aluminum dome with star shaped foam diffusion mask
seas 8 "poly woofer with excursion limiting shorting coil. This helps prevent damage from overdriving.

Enclosure: narrow baffle miter box with asymmetrical bracing.

The box is a minimalist and attractive. It is incredibly solid and dead, as if made from a cinder block.
Signet did an excellent job here. The enclosure does not resonate, or impose itself on the sound.
Every facet of this product was designed to work in complimentary symmetry.
The box characteristics (rigidity, size, baffle, port); The high quality tight tolerance poly caps and air core inductors in the crossover.
The driver spacing and composition. The custom made seas tweeter is a more revealing tweeter than the ubiquitous Vifa aluminum dome found in Vandersteen and older Von Swiekert speakers.
It has a very flat response into the upper treble with no peak or dip in the bandwidth.
The synergy here is exceptional.
This separates Signet from other speakers in the price range that are more colored, less detailed and articulate.
Signet illustrates the difference between good, and great.
Seas aluminum tweeter. This unit was clean, detailed and flat to 25khz. Unlike other metal drivers, there are no peaks, or resonances.
Seas 8" woofer. Destroys the myth that 8" mid range drivers have to be perceptibly slower than a 6.5". It all design engineering and implementation.
These speakers, (even in the early versions) measure ruler flat, limited by listening environment.
Basically, I'd be describing a set of ATC SCM-12s, (except for the port), or maybe some Proac Tablette 2000s.
In my experience, the signets are less colored in the midrange, and have better bass extension and power than the Proacs.
The bass does not quite seem to be as absolutely tight as with the ATC, but it is deeper, and has a natural decay to it.
The level of overhang is very minimal, and often setup correctable.
The port is tuned low enough to the point that it does not color the bass within the normal range of listening. With proper setup, these speakers deliver bass down to the upper 30 Hzs without port noise.

Setup: they should be on short stands (10" with spikes), at least 6" from the back wall.
You should have the tweeter at ear level. They can be separated by as little as 4feet much as 12feet and still give you a transparent and seamless sound field.
There is an amazing openness and airiness with a neutral presentation that is normally associated with a $2k-$4k investment in two way speakers.
I say this because there is very low color of any kind. It was very easy to note that these speakers communicated characteristics of the front end they were attached to. If you prefer a forgiving speaker, these are not for you. These will rise to the challenge of very revealing front ends and sources. They are not fatiguing unless the source component or recording is. The Sl-280 B/U will paint a vivid soundscape for you. If you prefer Vandersteen, proac, JM Reynaud, sonus-faber and the like, these speakers will seem to “cool” and unromantic for you. If the front end was warmish, the speakers warmed up. So they are not really cold blooded.
They communicate decent bass weight and punch. There is not a whole lot a single 8” driver can do compared to a floor stander, however they make the Proac Tablette 2000’s seem a bit lean and bass starved.

Note that I did not include associated equipment.
I hate to use terms like chameleon-like. That is so as not to prejudice you by brand or limits. It underscored my main
point that the speakers do what they are told.
They would make excellent studio monitors due to the flat, uncolored and very detailed response.

Strengths: detail, neutrality, articulation, non-fatiguing to listen to, nice   impact for size. Transparent, fast and open midrange with nice bass weight and punch.
