Speaker and RCA length Empty Speaker and RCA length

I just started to setup my system, next target is speaker cable and RCA. I don't want to reinvent the wheel and buy all cable length to test, I believe some of you might know about this.

- A friend recommend me to have 3m speaker cable run and 1m RCA, is it a must? What if I use shorter speaker cable? I saw some web side actually recommend to use shorter cable run to minimize the looses (1.5m speaker cable and 0.5-0.6m RCA).
- What is the effect (longer/shorter) this bring to the system?
