Indentifying Tubes -A Genuine Mullard ECC83
Lots of people have difficulty indentifying tubes but actually there many features that make the originals unique –example the British Mullard,Dutch Philips and German Telefunken & Valvo tubes
Mullard Ltd was a vintage British tube factory from early 1900s manufacturing vacuum tubes for worldwide use.Mullard had 2 primary plants located in Blackburn and Mitchum England .These plants codes were embossed on each tube by the suffix “B” and “R” .The ecc83 with suffix “B” from the Blackburn factory is being revered as the holy grail of the ECC83s .
They perfected the manufacture of audio tubes to the highest level in terms of audio performance and reliability .Their tubes of the 50`s and 60`s are highly sought after by audiophiles worldwide for their unparalled audio performance known for its rich natural harmonics and thick and detailed midrange.
As for the ECC83 tube there are a few ways to indentify a genuine Mullard
1)”B” suffix followed by the production code acid etched on to the tube glass near the bottom as below
2)the best performing production units had the “cold” glow signature .That on power on the filament s will glow brightly for a second or two. These filament part were key elements in the perfect audio tube made by Mullard. The elements were later used in the Philips and Valvo tubes when Mullard was acquired by Philips Holland.
3)Ribbed Long plates and short plates –the earlier Mullards were the longplates constructions which is revered. The short plates newer designs were meant to reduce microphonics in high gain circuits.
These has a halo (round) getter at the top which was placed close to the plates as below.
Pls indentify that your Mullard is genuine with the above tips as there many fake and rebranded ones out there!.
