Marantz CD Player CD74 (sold)
Classic Vintage Marantz CD74
This is one of the first generations of the legendary Marantz CD players available at the Hi Fi high end market.
Philips CDM1 Drive
With only a few exceptions, Marantz CD players, whose
sound quality has been highly valued since first appearing on the
market, have always featured Philips (Inventor of Compact Disc) drive mechanism. The
all metal Philips CDM1, an improve version of the very first swing arm
CD drive mechanism CDM0, was produced using zinc die-cast for all
sensitive sections to remove unwanted resonance. It was used in Philips products manufactured in
Belgium and Marantz products manufactured in Japan. Marantz established an assembly line at the Company's main
factory in Sagamihara, produced all necessary components, and began
producing Philips CDM1s in Japan. The Marantz CD-54 and Marantz CD-84
released in 1984 both utilized Japanese-made CDM1 units.
Philips TDA1540 DAC
Philips invented the world's first 14-bit Digital to Analogue Converter chip TDA1540 in 1982 just before the CD industry decided to use 16-bit as standard. Since TDA1540 was already in production, they were thus faced with the problem of squeezing
four times the resolution from their existing 14-bit DAC. The result
was an ingenious digital filter that combined 4x-oversampling and
noise-shaping—the latter is effectively a digital feedback loop, the
error produced when the filtered digital data are truncated to 14 bits
being fed back to the beginning—to give a digital system with full
16-bit resolution.
This is a gold colour unit that weighs a hefty 8Kg. It was made in Japan and had been built like a tank.
The drawer works smoothly. Lights are working fine. It plays CDs and CD-Rs with no problem.
In good working conditions. Only a few surface scratches on the casing due to it's age.
The
first generations legendary all metal CDM1 drive and the sweet analogue
sounding of the TDA1540 of CD74 are always sort after by collectors.
