Orelle DA-188 DAC
Description :
The design of the Orelle DA-188 digital-to-analogue converter is based on Occam's Razor approach to electronics design. Its philosophy that the fewer the stages an audio signal is passed through, the lesser the degradation which occurs. So the signal path is kept simple and short which the term for it is 'short signal path'. The DA-188 manifests itself in a shoebox size enclosure where the case has been shrunk around the compact circuit board. The internal construction is very neat, with no wiring except to the LED indicators. All its input and output connectors are boardmounted. A narrow circuit board to the left of the case carries the twin-secondary mains transformer (one secondary to power the digital circuit elements, the second for the analogue stages) and the rectifiers and reservoir capacitors which complete the twin power supplies. This board is physically and electrically connected to the closely separated main circuit board by seven thin wire links only, the intention being to decouple transformer vibration from any microphonyprone components in the converter circuitry.
Despite the widespread adoption of 1-bit converter technologies in mainstream hifi products which offers high order of linearity, there remains a caucus of specialist audio manufacturers who continue to prefer the sound quality provided by multi-bit converters. Orelle is one of them, hence its choice of the dual 18-bit, eight times oversampling converter from AD in the Orelle DA-188. Even those designers enthusiastic about 1-bit DAC technology admit that the high clock frequencies present difficult earthing and circuit layout problems, which may account for why, in audiophile circles, multi-bit conversion hasn't died the rapid death prognosticated for it. The music produced by the Orelle DA-188 has a lively characteristic. Within the frequency spectrum, it has a powerful and tight bass, a clear and coherent midrange and a crisp treble. It can be listened for long periods of time without feeling fatigued. It has exceptional transparency and wide dynamic ability, and makes the performance as realistic as possible. The Orelle DA-188 will outperform the on-board converters of most one-box machines, and gives every indication of being a product built to last.
