[size=16]The Mordaunt-Short Carnival 1 Boasts Unexpectedly Huge Sound from a Small Frame

The Mordaunt-Short Carnival 1 makes more music from a smaller box than any other speaker we've ever heard. This pint-sized marvel has completely stolen our hearts, with a big sound and rich tonal balance that is very surprising from a tiny speaker. Measuring a scant 5" wide and only 8.5" tall, the Carnival 1 doesn't take up much space, making it ideal for all sorts of applications. The Carnival 1 fills up most small to medium sized rooms with music, although in most medium sized rooms we recommend low-end reinforcement from REL's T-series. Another great use for the Carnival 1 is near-field listening, on a desk or small stands near the listening position. The Carnival 1 can be driven from most amplifiers, (we've used small tube amps, low-powered solid state and even a couple of low-watt digital amplifiers) sounds great up close and throws a mighty solid image.
Engineering
The Carnival 1 delivers purity of tone, imaging and soundstaging that even its big brothers have difficulty matching. This is because the Carnival 1's ingredients are a recipe for musical magic: small sealed cabinet, 1st order crossover, silk dome tweeter and a woven composite woofer cone. The small cabinet is sturdy and well ordered, eliminating vibration. Sealing the box improves transient response, eliminates port distortion and allows the Carnival 1 to overload gracefully. The first-order crossover is super-smooth, stepping out of the way so the drivers can strut their stuff. The 3.5" woven woofer may be small, but it's certainly big enough to fill a small room and has a surprisingly big sound. The silk dome tweeter integrates magnificently, opening up the top end superbly and seamlessy blending with the midrange. Pay no attention to the low sensitivity rating or recommended wattage, we've had a great time playing the Carnival 1 speakers with a broad variety of amps from 10W tubes to 300W monos. Definitely a speaker that should not be judged by its specifications, the Carnival 1 greatly outperforms expectations.
