WTB: Home theater setup - RM2k

Good day,

I seeking a set of 5.1 home theater with budget range not more than 2000RM, 60% for music and 40% for movie

Prefer the set with warantee and shop if i paid half with instalment scheme.

can buy new set JBL or PIONEER product..if u lucky enought used AV set
also available..happy hunting..

Why not you start with two channel system first and slowly add on other components when you are ready. You can get a better system.

My suggestion is to get a used AV Receiver or Amp first. Then start with two good quality speakers. Slowly you can get more speakers when there are bargains around.

No point getting a two channel Amp if he wants an AV amp in the first place. Afterall, a used AV Amp cost almost the same with the 2 channel Amp.

I have got a spare Pioneer VSX top end receiver. This is bought for my wife but she has gone on to digital ie HDMI. I can let you have it for a good price if you are interested, I will ask my wife.

for that budget i suggest u gor for the compact set. dont spend too much on ht, 60% for music means u need a separate hifi. start saving for that, meanwhile u can enjoy your music from that ht set

i had looked at Pioneeer RS3 at HN before, the outlook doesn't convience..

i Went to Hiway in SS2 before, they didn't sell such system with 2k budget, even i asked for RS-3 and they do not sell that

hhmmm..maybe their selling off already...will keep u update,quite difficult to buy whole set in that range..maybe try to purchase amplifier 1st n speaker later..dont rush for its..

I agree with the suggestion of buying a reasonable AV amp & good bookshelves. That should not cost you an arm n a leg.

You can always add on a pair of floor-standers later and use the bookshelves as sats (not sure whether a sub would be necessary)???

As mustafa pointed out, you will likely want a dedicated Hifi system later, so dont spend wildly now. Also, invest in one good component now - say the speakers...cause it will give you the chance of upgrading the rest of your stuff later

Guess i need to stretch my budget to 3K

i will try get a Yamaha AV amp RX 363 and Bookshelf speaker (PSB Apha T1 or Diamond 9.1) first, may be get a 2nd subwoofer if possible ...should i put a subwoofer together with just bookshelf speaker ?

not sure it will be good match ? any idea ?

hi alvin..if u want to use bookshelf speaker for front u must need a subwoofer..if not u will not satisfied with the sound quality,both PSB n Wharfedale its well known brands for the sound quality...for amplifier, better u go for used good quality amplifier but no waranty laaa...keep on looking for a deals..i personaly not vote for yamaha (yamaha fans sorry)

At one time there is one seller who sell off his used Marantz AV7500 Thx rated amp for less than 2k. Maybe u want to check it out online for this buyer.

Spec for this price seems pretty good to me.

I think Denon AVR-3801 or AVR 3802 are a very good AV amp in Musical and HT. New retail price is about RM 3XXX. Can consider it.

I read Yamaha package receiver & speaker set with sub just only RM1599. Panasonic Plasma 42" and free DVD player for only RM3299.

My take is, speaker is slightly more important than Amp in any audio setup. I am assuming if the comparing models have the same tech features.

Its more sensible if you put more resources into speakers. For the price range you got, I suppose there won't be much more difference among the amps.

Unless once in a while you will see a very good featured Amp selling at good price. Fizi's prev Amp is one of those. Too bad he sold it already

Dont spend too much on the amp, especially if its a basic AV one.

Put as much money as possible into your front speakers now. They will make a difference between average and good sound reproduction.

Alternatively, you can always move them to a dedicated Hifi setup later.

And don't forget, with the DTS decoding etc.. Centre speaker is very very important, in terms of music and vocal reproduction.


During my earlier age of Prologic only device, Centre speaker was meant to be just a small boxy speaker, nothing more.

Anyway, for RM2k both side receiver or speaker both could not go for good quality equipment only for entry level (new equipment). I'm sure you will upgrade both in near future, may be next year.

Unless try grab used good speaker and good receiver like nad, hk or etc. My HT setup I start with used B&W (front), kef center & bookshelf surround for RM1.5k lastly grab used Nakamichi receiver for RM700. That is 5 years ago.

I still keep the HT for my PC pair with tube buffer & mod Audigy 2 sound card (cable Canare DIY from Lowyat garage sale), still sound good for me (near my class A setup). I use Extreme Dynamat for equipment sound proofing, including my PC.

Last time (3 years ago) my friend have Onkyo one box HT set, consider very good after upgrade the cable. I don't know if the system still available (Desa Audio also selling Onkyo).

Btw Fizi ....i did contacted EPUL ....and he is in Johor ...he will deliver to KL only if able to find another buyer , i willing to get it as it really worth to own it even i believe it is under water set as it is new set with no warantee provided..
