I notice the warning too. I think it is mandatory by some kind of law in the U.S. Most of the ACE generic A/V products have them. I bought a subwoofer interconnect and it has them. Also an antenna cable and it has them as well. I think it is one of the materials used to make the sheath.

It doesn't specifically mention lead. But it specifically mentions risk of cancer.

Post by chua55 Thu Nov 04, 2010 11:49 pm

Hi Chua, my power cord is completely different, meticulously designed and hand built. The cord has over 60 ribbons of copper, silver and aluminum in air tubes, so there is no skin interference. Also there's a state of the art passive carbon nickel shield substrate coating the tubes. This shield acts on the magnetic qualities of the power signal focusing and eliminating outside interference. This unique design provides an amazing increase of air and dimension, that the common designs cannot deliver. Best Always, grover

Remark from designer. as busy as always, he did not answer directly but only talk about the cable theory.

Both the 2.5mm and ace orange also very good cable. Both also best value for money. It's just that the 2.5 is more suitable in that particular application. That why u need to know each of their character in order to be able use them at tha right place n right time.

U need to know what is your system lacking of n what component can contribute what u want at all times. So, u may start to try out components 1 by 1 .....

The 2.5mm it's eletrical wire that made in uk which r NOS.

Yep once your get to the thick and stiff ones there's turning back to the soft and limpy stuff Very Happy Very Happy

KenZen,

I didn't check out the price of the power cords at Hiwaylaser & Absolute AV as the integrateds (Krell and Coda) are very impressive, especially the latter driving a pair of Audio Note speakers.. The power cords must be doing their job then cheers

Out of curiosity too, while at AI, I noticed in or near the 'bargain bins' a bunch of these stiff and heavy cords we are talking like serious single digit gauge cords like Custom Power Cord (the Top Gun HCF variety) and NBS. being 'dumped' by their previous (like Toy Story Embarassed) which apparently, according to KN... after listening to the same set up using another 'locally' (I stand corrected ) designed/tweaked/improved power cords. I didn't quite ask what brand or who (presumably I was with the designer that afternoon) made the chords.

Anyway, can anyone (KN??) enlighten us here about this power cord ?? I was impressed, well, it was plugged throughout the system when I was auditioning for the phono amp anyway..

Got a sucker of step down transformer (the thing weighs easily 20-25 kg from a small 6"x6"x8" casing) from Promintheus. Apart from step down output, it does balance output 120 V ala Equitech/Bryston stuff and power isolation ala RGPC substations doing 'ground isolation of the secondary and ground in order to eliminate ground loops and noise from being induced in the system'.. And to top off, this costs about 1/4 or 1/3 of the other overseas products!!!

These are amazing stuff from local sifus and the point of views from forums like these which helps us enjoy our hobby... Happy Deepavali and Long weekend guys.

Cheers zb cheers sunny

I'm being poisoned and strangulated at the same time... apart from the TT and the new 'toy', also recently acquired a higher end CD toy of the TEAC persuasion ... As you can see, tomorrow is my better-half's birthday and let's just say her birthday 'revenge' wish list is going to leave me strangulated, crucified and with a huge hole in my wallet in the next couple of months*or years!!!) in order for me to expiate myself for these 'new' toys Embarassed No No

Anyway KN, I'm still learning the curves (pun intended) of the new toy, ... will have to wait till my proper amp comes back from Dr Oh ... Itching .... will report later flower

IMHO, I believe it is the insulation material which could be PVC. PVC produces dioxin when heated/burn and it is a very deadly gas, hence the warning. It is the only poison created without any known threshold limit of safety.

Many big companies in the developed world are phasing out PVC and replaced them with less toxic material. Cross-Linked PE is used to replace PVC as insulation for example. Take a stroll down to Ikea and you can see that NONE of the plastic products are made of PVC.

Others include NIKE, Mercedes, Honda and many more are beginning to phase out PVC.

Unfortunately, we are still using PVC in most of our daily products in Malaysia.

Sorry to digress from the topic. Very Happy

Roger Skoff, founder of XLO Electic talks about Cables (& power cords).

http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?fcabl&966738036&openusid&zzAvguygeorge&4&5

Hi all,Ray Here I regularly pick up my inventory and special orders from XLO. While I was there last week, I had an opportunity to Chat with Roger (Owner of XLO) on why his power cords work. I remember most of the conversation and thought you would enjoy it

Roger: Ray would you like to know why a XLO power cords work????

Ray: Yes, Pleeease tell me. I hear so many different theories, I don't know what to tell my clients, they are under the impression that it is black magic.

Roger: The key is in the design. That is why power cables work best on transports, amplifiers, and especially video devices. Pre amps, DACS, and other devices don't benefit as much.

Ray: Why is that?

Roger: Pre amps, DACS and other devices usually have power supplies with sufficient build quality to meet the performance demands. Most people are under the impression that power cords are used to keep interferance out, but this is impossible. Think of it this way: power comes from the power station, runs miles to your home, travels through romex in your home to your outlet, and there is nothing a three foot power cord can do to filter all that rf from the power station. Tests have shown that loud speakers, amplifiers, output devices work best on the same frequency as an AM radio bandwidth, approximately 60 cycles). So if you can design a power cord to try to maintain that cycle, you inherently will have better performance. Another words, don't build it to filter out, build it to keep wanted cycles in.

Ray: Another words you are trying to maintain consistency in the frequency?

Roger: That is correct.

Ray: Can I ask you about your opinion on speaker cable? There is a lot of confusion in this area also.

Roger: A lot of manufacturers build too much capacitance in the cable. This alters the transmission. Speaker cables and interconnects should do absolutely nothing to the sound. They should be as close to nuetral as possible.

Ray: Roger do you mind if I post this on the internet?

Roger: Absolutely not.

I was given a PL1500 power cord from XLO,I tryed it on our Zenith 900 Pro CRT and our Sony LCD in our Show room after seeing the results I am a firm believer in Power cords Especially for Video Display devices XLO Limited Edition wire and cables were just reviewed in Ultimate Audio Magazine. Needless to say Roger definately knows his wire. The cables and wires received top praise from the reviewers. Take care.

zeebee, I read about that local cable designer too (unless there's more than one...). Seems that his cables are really wacking the so called top end cables but he hand build all of them and the waiting list runs into months coz he apparently burn-in the cable and test them to ensure they sound consistent before delivery...

chua, still trying to digest the difference or Rai is too tantalizing that you forgot all about us???

mugen, thanks for sharing that bit from Roger Skoff. Now we know why there are so many Lohger made "XLO" from China...

I think our moderators here know the real identity but I believe is Adrian Wong (I stand corrected), of runs Audio Image fame. I will PM his contact. Another person you may consider is Nicholas Chua of Promitheus Audio (google on the web). I have seen and heard his PC, IC (this one I bought a pair) and speaker cables. Also have bought a number of his products (energizers, step down isolator/balanced transformers - excellent stuff and a tube DAC).

Just to add, the special local cables are not cheap because the materials used are from a famed audio brand as well. The "raw materials" used in this cable is all properly sourced and not some local Jln Pasar stuff.

Just that its soldered/terminated with alot of "tender loving care" and in a "custom configuration" that gives it the unique flavour and performance.

For my case, as I told ZB, just look at the number of high-end PCs traded in. One may be an exception but ZB noted SEVERAL highly rated top of the range power cords in the 'value bin', Should think what that implies ! Very Happy

Chua, what about arranging for a shootout with the SLC (Special Local Cable) that was terminated with TLC?

Mugen, any indicative price on this SLC? zeebee mentioned that it's either Adrian Wong or Nicholas Chua... so who's the one with the TLC touch? Thx

I don't think I'm promoting any particular shop or dealer.. I mentioned Adriaan and Nicholas because they have their 'local' products and designs which are I believe world-class and worth the money, power cord included. But the set up I was referring to was at Audio Image and this particular PC were powering all the Odysseys and the TT and the 'toy' I was auditioning and subsequently bought:D.

As I mentioned too the other PC snakes that were traded in like Power Chord Company HC (which were de rigeur pc for a number of Stereophile reviewers at one time) for this 'local' products warrants a special 'salute' to the designer and I suppose in line with this thread, serves it's purpose or 'use', i.e providing the best sound for the music cheers

At the moment, I have yet to hazard a guess of the price of these lovelies... hope can afford one Very Happy Drooling at those Odyssey's... Laughing Embarassed

Actually I believe I have mentioned numerous times that I know Adrian very well and that I myself frequents only a few shops : Audio Image, HiWay Laser in SS2, and so forth. I think that is the best way to do, to make it upfront.

On the same token, if you are 'gila-gila' about branded well reviewed interconnects, speaker cables and power cords, you might want to drop by Audio Image because they are quite reduced in price due to the traded-in status. I wouldn't say cheap because it seems those branded ones, like Ferrari and Rolls Royce are priced at sheer ludricrous prices ! So even if they are sold at a significant discount also I personally wouldn't spend over 10k for such a cable. But they ARE traded in and they ARE available at discounted prices. Actually a lot have already been sold to gleeful owners who really felt they found a bargain. For their own particular reasons, they won't consider Adrian's cables but those trade-ins are a godsend to them. I am not a big follower of that latest 'fashion' in cables but I have seen cables like pythons, some with a bracelet that you can twist to fine-tune the sound, and all sorts of super thick, super expensive, super heavy, and serious looking cables in the 'value bin'.

Yep, the 'twistable one', this is the 'Custom Power Cord Company' HCF power cord I mentioned earlier Very Happy Very Happy you may also consider them as your low impact gym weight as regular lifting and shifting them may tune and tone arm muscles Laughing .. can we consider this another 'use' for power cords Very Happy Very Happy

here is another power cord that sound like your good friend. it is the Bybee PC from Jack Bybee. It operates on the quantum mechanical level to bring the sound to the next level.
