This is probably my best find from the Amcorp Mall in the last few years. The 1979 record is mint, not a single scratch and sounds fabulous.

Finished all the Mahler's Symphonies; recording is very decent. The standard of the recording seems varied from disc to disc, but still a very enjoyable set.
How would you rate Jascha Horenstein's Mahler?

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Hi, ecoli123.
Leonard Bernstein is one of the conductors who put a lot of efforts to introduce the Mahler Symphonies to music lovers.
Horenstein recordings are my reference for Mahler Symphonies. Unfortunately, he didn't record Symphonies 2, 5 and unfinished 10 (at least I still can't find any commercial recording for it). I haven't listened a 3rd and Das Lied von der Erde come close to his. But no doubt, it is difficult to collect his CD, very rare in market especially those from Unicorn (1st, 3rd and 6th).
Other Mahler conductors that I like are Hermann Scherchen (still searching for his 2nd), John Barbirolli (his unforgettable 5th), Bruno Walter & Otto Klemperer.

Just arrived on Monday-in 24bits/176.4kHz.
Would be happy with just the 24/88.2 with saving of USD66.99. Can buy 4 more 24/96 albums with that.

Hi, ecoli123.
I am not familiar with Julia Fisher and Janine Jansen albums.
But I think you can try Julia Fisher's Bach 6 Sonatas & Partitas for Solo Violin, Janine Jansen's Bach Inventions & Partita.
Regarding Hilary Hahn, I have her CDs.
http://classicalandjazz.blogspot.com/search/label/Hilary%20Hahn
All are gifts from a Japanese friend who is a part time violinist.
You can consider her Bach, Stravinsky or Mozart works also.
If only could have 1 CD, I will choose her Elgar Concerto & Vaughan Williams's The Lark Ascending.

Hi, ecoli123.
Thanks for sharing.
The Jansen's Mendelssohn is a great performance.
It is first time for me to listen to Jansen.
But please take note if you plan to buy the album.
I think this is not the performance recoded in her Mendelssohn/Bruch album.
It is necause the conductor in Youtube is Roger Norrington and not Riccardo Chailly.
Just for sharing, my personal favorite for Mendelssohn VC are:
1) Kyung Wha Chung
http://classicalandjazz.blogspot.com/2010/11/mendelssohn-bruch-violin-concertos.html
2) Yehudi Menuhin (one of the best Beethoven also)

3) Jascha Heifetz

Hi...
My choices, where he has managed to fuse the Piano as one instrument weaving around in the arrangements alongside the violin, the flute, and acoustic guitars in what is really ensemble playing. ( one of my finds during a visit to my regular haunt )
On Rebecca Pidgeon, one of the classical, heavy vocal, smooth flowing and good presentation.
Simply entertaining and soothing.
cheers

My choices, where he has managed to fuse the Piano as one instrument weaving around in the arrangements alongside the violin, the flute, and acoustic guitars in what is really ensemble playing. ( one of my finds during a visit to my regular haunt )
On Rebecca Pidgeon, one of the classical, heavy vocal, smooth flowing and good presentation.
Simply entertaining and soothing.
cheers

TL...
Thanks for the link...was mesmerised and am still mesmerised... Managed to find some very nice CD's at my regular haunt........burnt quite a bit during my last visit...have ear marked a few CD's mostly instrumental / vocal....wait for my bonus....
Mary Black, Celtic Woman. - have not run the CD yet but will hear them over the weekend... but Omar Akram was played for the second time yesterday nite and it gets into your skin in a good way.... My mom was also taken aback with his skill at playing the piano....That says a lot...
cheers
