We can in fact exchange ideas and maybe pay a visit to each other for an audition.  Maybe we can start by describing your journey/history up to the current set-up.

I started with mini compo way back in the late 80's as a student.  When I started work and with abit of money that I was willing to dish out on this hobby, that was in 1992. I got my first hifi from Masai, Johor as I was working there.

I started off with a Marantz cd52 Mk2, Marantz PM 43 and a Mondaunt Short MS 30 on a diy stand fabricated by one of my contractors.

It was a decent set and for a beginner, the set-up was indeed a big thing for me.  The set-up was brand new and we did not really have access to internet.  So, buying used was not easy.  1992 was also the time where Malaysia had its first badge of foreign workers flown in from Bangladesh.

The set cost me perhaps around RM3K plus. It cost more than a month of my salary.

Well, it was Marantz...big deal during that time.  I kept the set for a long time till 1998, when I replaced the amp with MF E100.  I fell in love with this E100 when I saw it in KL Subang Parade in 1995, in one of the shops called 'Melody ...something'.  It remained as a dream for me cos the list price was close to RM4k.

Eventually, I upgraded the speakers to Polk Audio RT 3 not knowing that it was just a side way upgrade.  The cdp had to go and I got a Philips CD880 used which died after a couple of years. And came Sony xb930e.  RT 3 was then replaced with a ProAc Tab 3.

I would concurred that CD880 and Tab3 were very good stuff despite the years behind them.  Certainly, there were well made and robust.

In 2008, I got myself an exposure 2010 cdp and I sold the Sony cdp.  This is of course a better player with better transparency. Got myself a Quad 12L and out ProAc went.  Quad gave me an idea of China's craftsmanship.  Simply top class.  They can give you quality if you can dig deep into your pocket.

By end of 2013, having been in Hi5 for more than 20 years and most of the time changing equipments, I told myself that I have to stop at one point. And so, one last final call and I called it the 'retirement set-up' cos the rest of the money goes to my day to day meal, I have totally revamped the whole system.........to be continued.

Wow, look like you are a hands-on guy.  Recently, I read alot.  The general idea that I gathered is those who have experience turntable (tt) vouched that it is a better sounding format than the rest.  I am getting my friend to come over to my place to try his Project tt.  Maybe you can tag along also.

By the way, I have not listened to tt before or at least not in a proper set-up. What is your idea?

1.5 years ago I just started to have more times to continue my Hifi journey. I started with buying a HT system and a USB DAC and Naim amp to play downloaded hi resolution loseless files from my laptop and  was followed by buying a used TT for Lp spinning,of cos follow by buying a lot of LPs . 
When talking about vinyl records, personally I find it sounded more real as compare to CDs and loseless file from CAS. I prefer Lp as it carries lots of old sentimental values and fond memory.  Good or no Good it's all depends on individual taste and preference. I was never a very serious Hifi hobbyist before and now,so I am not in the position to give comments on this...Just like to continue my journey to listen to good songs and musics. Sharing fun times and knowledge  by making more friends with all the Hifi kakis and hobbyists for my coming retirement life..Cheers !!!!.. 

That's a real great journey of yours.  And how wonderful that you also ventured into streaming. I am still sceptical about the whole idea of downloads especially me coming from the redbook cd era.  Not even the tt era.  But cassesttes, yes.  Unfortunately, the cassesttes were certainly not that great imho.

In fact, before putting my investment in naim cd5i Mk2, I was comtemplating on dac/streaming.  TT was never on my mind cos' I would not want to start from scratch.

I would love to compare how these audio format placed along side by side....streaming, cd player, TT.

Having sold all my previous equipment within the last 6 months namely, MF integrated E100, Quad 12L and Exposure 2010 with  TDA 1543 Dac reserved as standby now, I am happy with the current rig....totem arro, bryston pre/power and a naim cdp.

You really have to evaluate yourself.  Can't tell how close is it to the originals.  Not everyone loves nasi lemak like I do, isn't it?

yangon: used to own a philips cd880 which housed the tda 1541 single crown but the laser head went dead. Fantastic sound sound.  Warm and yet detail. Very natural.

How do you compare your philips cdp and your CAS (Computer as Source)? I got a laptop with foobar2000.  Can I use my separate (dedicated) dac tda1543 with coaxial input with the laptop? If yes, how do I do it? Get a adaptor cable with coaxial to usb?

Your advice is much appreciated.

 Thanks. You have indeed pumped in some andrenalin into me in the direction of CAS.  From your comment, I'm just one compatible DAC away from implementing CAS.

To fully explore the potential of streaming from a PC system, you will need to have a USB to S/PDIF converter.

SCwong , thanks to VT4c info,, you will need a USB to S/PDIF converter . FYI.....this is one of the USB to S/PDIF converter

Just a note on the MF Vlink... its limited to 192kHz only. If you have hires files at 384 kHz... then it will not play or the unit may down sample it to 192.

Due to scepticism in CAS, I started off with the purchase of an entry level USB/PDIF converter to link it with my tda 1543 DAC.  I bought the firestone from Jaben most recently and now they don't carry the brand anymore.

I use an Acer laptop with foobar2000.  The setting is 16/44.1 as per the capabilities of the external DAC.

I compared it with Naim CDP, an Exposure 2010 CDP and the combination of Exposure as transport with the DAC.

The CAS came in last on sound quality.  It lacks dynamic, detail, much lesser in depth and width.  I am very sure that the USB/SPDIF and probably the DAC did not do justice to the others sources in comparison.

Naim came up top and needless to say, exposure as stand alone even with dac did not do badly.

Guess, I have to invest more to realise the potential of CAS.

All rip into wav files with media player.  I think the files are ok.  Just the quality of the equipments.  I presumed.
