Led Zeppelin - remastered? Empty Led Zeppelin - remastered?

Post by kamfei0512 Thu Sep 04, 2014 5:00 pm

Can't help but to wonder how good (or bad) these "remastered" recordings of Led Zeppelin are?

Led Zeppelin (Atlantic ‎– 8122796641)
Led Zeppelin II (Atlantic ‎– 8122796640)
Led Zeppelin III (Atlantic ‎– 8122796576)

All are released (or shall I say: re-released) on 02 Jun 2014.
So, any comments on these remastered recordings or comparison with the original LPs are most welcome.

Cheers,

Led Zeppelin - remastered? Empty Re: Led Zeppelin - remastered?

Got the led Zeppelin 2 last month. Sound wise it's definitely better than the normal CD. If memory serves me right, the early CD was jangly, splashy treble and metallic - all the attributes that made vinyl lovers run back to vinyl. Now it's cleared up and listenable. But it's still not there yet to qualify as an audiophile recording. But hey nobody listens to Led Zep in the context of symphonic music. For me it brings back memories of listening while under the influence of you know what.

Waiting for Led Zep 4. Then I will be walking up the stairs to heaven. Releasing overseas in Oct 28 but maybe here as early as Oct 15.

Yesterday got the remastered CD deluxe double CD Led Zep 4 and for good measure also got Led Zep 2. (Made a mistake in my earlier post got the 3 instead of 2). Either you love heavy metal or you hate it. But as audiophiles we need to know the remastering quality. Led Zep 2 is so much better in sound quality than the 4. It's open, low end is there and the highs are not splashy. But Led Zep 4 is closed in, and the highs are splashy. Dare I say that the earlier albums were still mastered on valve electronics and the later albums on SS?

I am thinking of getting the remastered LP of Led Zep 4 (despite knowing it is a remastered) because the early CD tends to sound harsh on my system (maybe just me).
Knowing Led Zep will not make it as "audiophile", I am planning to find out if remastered LP will do any difference.

Good for you to get your hands on the remastered CDs so quickly.
It's not like these CDs/LPs are to be found easily in Ipoh but I will try my luck here.

Led Zep 2 has the overall best sound quality amongst all the original Led Zep releases. It was a combination of recording venues and techniques. The album was recorded in a bunch of studios and then mastered at one go on the fly. I guess with not much to think about, a gem emerged.

Just purchased the 180gm Jimmy Page remastered Led Zep 2...

And I've just spun it side by side the Jap pressing from the mid-80s...

Remaster: More upfront, cleaner of course, and Plant's vocals are definitely soaring with a tendency towards brightness. Bass line is definitely more pronounced but somehow, Bono's kick drum is subdued in favor of mid range pyrotechnics.

Jap Pressing: More balanced, with a slight reverb/echo tinge to the overall sound. Mastered at a lower volume, hence requiring increase in system volume. It's a tastier, more detailed pressing at the expense of pyrotechnics.

A slight edge to the Jap Pressing from this punter... for balance and that slight retro echo.

Most japanese pressings always sacrifice dynamics in favour of lush mids and thick vocals. Same is true for pop albums too.

Now only if someone has the old UK original pressings for comparison.

Most older Japanese pressings are phase inverted. So do try inverting your speaker plugs. There should be a world of difference.
