Economical Racks for AV equipment Empty Economical Racks for AV equipment

Post by WongKN Wed Dec 23, 2009 11:48 am

Hi everyone,

I am looking for 'economical' racks for my AV/HT system. I know the term 'economical' is different to different people. What I mean is not those multi-thousand ringgit items but something more affordable, like a couple or max a few hundred bucks. Of course preferably solid. I don't really need fancy materials, just a solid metal (preferable) rack with solid MDF boards would be fine. So I want to ask for experiences from you guys for shops where I might be able to check out racks that suit my requirement. I will need 4 tier with enough clearance in the bottom-most tier to insert a mop (for times when we mop the floor) if possible. Hope some of you guys have experience shopping for this sort of racks and can give me some recommendations.

Thanks Economical Racks for AV equipment Icon_biggrin

Hi Kaki's,

Same dilemma with me, as seen in my system's photo, the Pathos (abt 60 lb) will definitely be out question to be the glass top I used to put the LCD TV and the cabinet used for other equipment. I am however am looking for a wooden rack system, googled around and saw a blog about racks from "Middle Kingdom' in Amcorp Mall. Any info and experience (pricewise, quality etc.) guys (and gals Embarassed) at the Middle Kingdom or elsewhere (locally). Thanks.

Cheers

Wabun, thanks for the offer. I do plan a trip to Taiping Maxwell hill in the near future. Would be nice to drop by Ipoh on the way there or back. If I ever have the chance, I will be sure to PM you about it.

Zeebee, I will check out this 'middle kingdon' shop soon as well.

There is a shop in AmCorp mall called ATS, selling MDF racks and stands.
Not too sure of the suitability and the quality.
Is this the shop that you mentioned?

car-o-scope,

You are right, the shop selling the customizable AV racks is on the 1st Floor. The "Middle Kingdom" Audio Synthesis outlet on the 2nd Floor has two racks of fixed height - a regular solid shelf one and the other, a clone of the Finite Element (?), apart from a couple of isolation platforms.

Cheers!

In terms of price, MDF is still ok.
The expensive ones are those acrylic type.
The price went up a lot.
Small small size also very expensive.

just bought a very nice piece of thick acrylic from that Amcorp ATS shop last week. That old man is quite a nice chap to deal with.

Might wanna go get a tiered acrylic rack coz i am also running about rack space. Have recently resorted to placing stuff on the *floor* lately.

Alamak, just now (actually around 10.30 to 12.00 noon) went around Amcorp, but most shop still not open. "Middle Kingdom" closed until 28th Dec 2009. Guy next door selling 'spider' rack seen here recently only but has one model. Mr Lim (shop in front/opposite Middle Kingdom) has a used gorgeous ARC Pre-Power (can't recall the model) but shop not opened. A&L displaying some pre-power Densen combo with prices which make me want to keep my 'vintage' combo which I thought to put up for sale soon. No

Almost drop by the ATS Shop but have to rush back... Anyway will drop by again soon. Laughing Merry Christmas everyone santa

Cheers,

Post by WongKN Fri Dec 25, 2009 7:37 pm

Thanks very much for the information guys (plus those in the member's system thread as well). I can now plan my Monday visit properly. Looks like best time is to go around lunch time. Maybe I will just drop by the old A&W shop, have a nice root-beer/hot-dog lunch and then pop over to check out the racks.

For racks, as long as I can confirm the build-quality, I am fine with locally made ones. Most all my racks in the past were made by my friend (with the initial WKW) and they have always been strong and solid and great value for money. Unfortunately WKW has retired so can't get those racks anymore. For the A/V system, I want a solid, laid-back (i.e. visually unintrusive) rack so that I can organise the system properly. I need to add a karaoke conponent to the system for my family and I decided it's time to redesign the system.

Post by WongKN Tue Dec 29, 2009 10:42 pm

Hi guys, sorry for the absense. My internet went down from Sunday afternoon and only resumed back just now. As a result, I am now only checking/catching up on my internet communications, including emails. Anyway, I did drop by Amcorp Mall yesterday but only for a short while. Most of the shops are still closed, eventhough I was there at 2:30pm. The 'middle kingdom' shop was open, full of locally made hifi/av racks, plus some accessories like spikes, footers, etc. Interesting shop, Saw some interesting choices but dissapointingly pricey, especially for locally made racks. I suppose cost of materials is really very high nowadays. An acrylic, brushed steel rack is RM1.3k. Since I need 2, that means RM2.6k for AV racks alone. YIKES ! Wallet cannot tahan already !! Economical Racks for AV equipment Icon_lol The Audio Synthesis shop was closed but looking thru the glass, couldn't really see any racks for sale. I didn't know Asia Sound relocated there from City Square (or were they always there all the time ?). The uncle in the shop seemed to recognize me and nodded and smiled at me when I was window-shopping (i.e. looking at the equipment from outside the shop). Is that hifi exchange shop owned by Leslie Loh ? I will probably plan a longer visit on one of the coming saturdays next month/year.

joe....

thanks. Economical Racks for AV equipment Icon_smile

Yeap, seen that rack at mudah.. but have not seen it physically. Looking at its dimension, it is unable to support an additional gear ( small foot print ) on the same shelf.

Currently, i have a similar rack acquired years back and sand filled for rigidity. Have changed the top shelf-ing to accomodate a TT and phonostage / Tube buffer.

Exploring the possibility of DIY...ing one myself slightly longer.... to support two gears being one big foot print, small foot print on the same shelf and should accomodate two TT's on the top shelf.

Yes, the commercial units are to long, a minimum of 5ft and price wise...no need to mention....phew...sweating profusely... .
