Harbeth speakers choice Empty Harbeth speakers choice

Post by ongaaron Sat Aug 14, 2010 8:01 pm

Hello fellow audiophilers,
Need your suggestions. Just contacted Harbeth fever. Room size : 10ft W 13ft L 9.5ft H. Source : cd and lp player. Amplifier : Exposure classic 23/28 pre/power 70 watter or Musical Fidelity Trivista 300 int amp 350 watter. Music type : acoustic jazz, vocals and slow rock. Which Harbeth model is suitable for my room size? I listen from medium to medium high volume. Room is acoustically treated.
Thanks alot in advance.

Hi,
Exposure classic amps are perfect for Harbeth. Personally I would take the Exposure separates over the MF Trivista.

For your 10' x 13' x 9.5' room, the biggest speaker you can fit into this room is the SHL5. I have my SHL5 in a 11' x 17' x 8' room. I would think the Compact 7ES3 is a better fit. You might want to decide between the Compact 7s and the M30 for your choice of music. The Compact 7s are more dynamic and play rock music better than the M30s. Good luck.

As you may have known, Harbeth are all easy to drive speakers. The Exposure 28 being a powerful amp with two toroidal transformers and dedicated power supplies will not have a problem driving both. Although the M30s may require more power the Exposure would do fine. If you already have the Exposure amps you can try them out with the both speakers. The friendly local dealer may accomodate a home demo.

Your room is best with c7es3 cos the bigger shl5 may give you bass issue (even it is well known to give excellent bass control) due to larger box vol and bass out put.

The the music you like, C7es3 still best over the M30 which is more perfect for classical music and opera.

Exposure is much better match with Harbeth. Choose MF only if you got zero choice.

Btw, paper watts is for presentation. Actaul loading is another matter. Do not choose amp base on watts.

Hope this help.

Cheers.

Suggestion: go listen to the various harbeth @tropical audio and if possible ask Sam for a home audition once u have decided which model u like. The home audition will help u decide once u have heard the speaker in your room with the amp/cables/etc currently in use.

Alternatively: go listen to as many home setup with harbeth speakers to narrow down the search as to which model gets your feet tapping. Ask your friend to bring the speakers to try out at your place. Then visit Tropical audio to listen to the choice of the same model u have narrow down. Then ask for a home trial (if possible).

How'd it go with getting the home auditions? Actually i think Sam would be more than happy to let you have a good detailed listen. He enjoys his stuff and let me have a couple of extended auditions at his shop before i settled for the C7s

Ha Ha - agreed - the latter probably not! He seemed quite happy, though, to volunteer to come over to my place to troubleshoot my old CDP, and did the same for a friend of mine whom i put in touch with him. I was just a walk-in customer, so at the very least I think he wouldn't mind giving an extended listening session at his shop. As to whether he will drive his equipment around for home auditions - that I cannot say!

Hi Harbeth fans,

May I know what is the current selling price of Compact 7ES-3? Why is it very hard to find a used unit in this forum?

Thanks.
