Re: Vinyl/LP/Phono/Turntable Accessories Help!!
Its a cartridge database with known specs and intimate details to enable you to match it with the tonearm compliance. Now you see why playing TT is not just that easy.. the more you delve into it, more science put to practice. Then you go start a troubleshooting spree and figuring out where you've likely gone wrong...hehehehe! Amazingly, the Japanese TT manufacturer simplified so many areas, like telling you, why worry so much, just plug and play! Actually we're quite fortunate this kind of large info is now readily accessible, unlike years ago anyone won't know anything extra except from the cartridge leaflet. Thank God for the internet where anyone can enhance their knowledge easily on vinyl knowledge.

I have another Rega P9 with the RB900 arm fitted with a Transfiguration Temper and again, I believed the sound should be very much better, given the quality of the sources. My main concern is my 3rd turntable, a Clearaudio Solution fitted with a Artemiz tonearm and a Shiraz cartridge. I moved the turntable gear when repositioning my set up and the arm went out of alignment. I also need to have the Shiraz to be retipped. Any advice or assistance will be greatly appreciated.
My goodness ... you've spent a FORTUNE on TTs !!!!!! So many Clearaudio TT and exotic tonearms!
OK, can try and align them with my Clearaudio Alignment gauge if u like. U buy lunch .
Actually, why not just refer back to the local Clearaudio dealer. Sure will be able to get all the alignment back in place and your tonearms and carts balanced nicely.
U know who the local Clearaudio dealer in town is right ?
.. hang on .. if your CA Evo has got a tangential arm, then the Clearaudio gauge is not applicable. Its only for unipivot radial tonearms. So mebbe just do for your CA Solution.
Hey mugenfoo, is the lunch or dinner still on?

Yes mugen, it is that album The Hunter Limited 8000 issue. If u listen carefully it is recorded off centre, louder to the right channel. Pls verify if i am wrong. TQ

ok, on the first track "rock u gently", the singer's imaging should be DEAD CENTRE.
Also, the recording has much more sibilance than usual. Like the singer is hissing into the mike at certain parts of the singing. This happens all throughout the album but some songs are less affected than others.
At first i thought the hissing / sibilance was due to my improper TT alignment setup until i brought my LP to a hifi shop and purposely play my LP on a RM100K Kuzma TurnTable with tangential air-bearing tone-arm, and the sibilance is also present, so its in the recording itself and nothing to be alarmed about.

Re: Vinyl/LP/Phono/Turntable Accessories Help!!
another test of imaging focus with accurate depth perception would be the track "New York New York" . The singer Jeniffer Warnes should sound further away but still with a rock solid centre imaging. Also there should be a hint of the recording studio's reverb that is somewhat livelier than the 1st track "Rock u gently".

TQ Mugen. Yesterday when I played it again I was shock as there was nothing off centre but everything works out nicely. May be my equipment need to run it for a while. Will try to locate the sound that you described. It is fun playing with LPs.

Re: Vinyl/LP/Phono/Turntable Accessories Help!!
suspect more like a bad connection somewhere.
warm-ups should not mess with gain levels unless u have defective electronics like a leaky capacitor or a misbehaving transistor that changes characteristics with its operating temperatures. Better get it checked out if the off-centre balance happens when your equipment is cold, or if it goes off-centre when fully warmed up.

Yeah, it could be a bad connection as it is now working perfectly. So Mugen, which system are you using now for yr tt? Is it as in the photo in yr personal profile? Do you hunting for new albums? Should we buy new or it will defeat the purpose of tt.

What lah?...you buggers all like infantile. One abbreviation and all bang on it. Ok..LP means Long Play, EP means Extended Play, SP means Short play. NP means No play.. I use one of those play play rings to dampen the tonearm counterweight and it uplifts the sound...so I hear and its exciting, so whats the problem?

And where got such record with DPP?.. self concocted stuff.
Needs a suppression cap across the switch mostly. Did that to my Rega.
Where to find?.. old junk PC monitor.. you'd be amazed what can be recycled...if capable and effort put in.

Back to LP.

I also suspect the switch is the culprit behind the pop sound.
It has been quite some time already but I left it as it is coz I seldom play LP.

Hi guys,
Just sharing:
Resurrected my Linn Sondek today. New belt, thanks Gloria, and new Ortofon KA cart. Bearing oil replaced with fresh fully synthetic motor oil as usual. Magic!
Had many carts in the past, Dynavectors, Linn's own but somehow I like the sound of Ortofons and I think they're good value and the part exchange is a plus point. Started with the MC10 Super then the 15, 30 Supreme now the KA. Will upgrade to Jubilee eventualy when I get hold of an Ittok.
Cheers.

If you've never replaced the suspension springs and rubber bush, replace them to the newer black type and tune them as per instruction manual. New springs does it justice. I renewed so many of the busted items last round. Still one or two more items actually, or when funds are available.
BTW, how much of oil did you put into the bearing?..it should be about 80cc.

There's this small tube that came with the black linn oil when I bought the deck in 1982. I use it as a prescribed amount. Oil is Mobil 1. If it works from freezing cold in highly stressed and hot performance car engines it should more than work in a a turntable. Been using synthetic oil for ages.
My springs are ok. Next upgrade Ittok, wanna bring to full works as they should be in the 80s. Kinda nostalgic too hehe.
Cheers guys

Thanks for pointing it out. Got my metric system wrong. Its about 0.8 to 1ml injected into the bearing well. The spindle is designed to float in a film of oil all round. Anything less ain't good for long term. I recall Rega need only a couple of drops.
The most recent item change was a new original Linn armboard, which I suspect the material composition is entirely different from those of old. The new armboard sports the latest silkscreen logo on it. I believe there's a margin of sonic improvements with this. I've also replaced many of the nuts and bolts to higher spec ones. Its only the PSU board (non Vahalla) with renewed capacitors, and motor that's currently retained for now.

TQ, Think I'll change the armboard too when I get the Ittok. If anything b'cos the color has faded. Then the whole deck would look a shining beauty spinning my favorite vinyls.
Resting my Systemdek 2X900 for now. Btw got this A&R P77 cart minus stylus, came with an old Rega 3 given by a friend. Does anyone know where I can get a stylus for it? Appreciate, cheers

Sorry but I can't say much if you've fears, phobias or jitters of buying from Ebay. Its been so far so good for me for years, even for another buddy buying tubes and some other stuff recently from reputable Ebay power sellers. Ask seller all you need to know before clicking on purchase or bidding, lastly you tell them to PRINT your shipping address and telephone number, so that our postman will not send the goods somewhere else or read wrongly. Sorry, I can't lecture further on who, where and how to buy. Do own research and entirely own judgement to buy or not.

i also buy from EBay before . So far so good.
The serious sellers would want to maintain their reputation so cases of fraud would be low if buying from the sellers with good track-record. But again, caveat emptor as always.

Re: Vinyl/LP/Phono/Turntable Accessories Help!!
Hi guys
I'm a newbie here so Happy New year.
I've sort of been reading bits and pieces about buying from ebay etc.
I have bought several things from ebay but there are items which I would stay away from.
All used cartridges as the sellers mostly lie about the hours put on them. This I know from experience and friends experiencs. Tonearms unless new can have poor bearings. I have an Ortofon Windfeld and the new Ortofon A90 both new. I would not dream of buying anything like these from ebay. Not because of price but because it's so important to make sure these are NEW!
I own several TTs. A Thorens TD125, TD126 MK2, Garrard 401, Rega P3-24, VPI HRX. The older units from ebay specialists and the others bought new.
The electronics I have bought some from ebay and others from either new or the manufacturer. I have a Whest Audio PS.30R phonostage B-graded from the manufacturer, Whest Audio PS.30RDT from new, Whest Audio MC REF V from new (yes I love them!). The ATC 150ASL speakers are new. The LAMM preamp I bought from Audiogon but from a dealer. So a real mixture.
I read somewhere on this forum a while back that MM phonostages are inherently superior to MC stages. The reasoning was very inaccurate and wrong. To set the record straight as I also co-design audio electronics but NOT for Whest Audio! Both MM and MC phonostages have 2 or more stages of gain. What the difference is, depending on design, the amount of gain. The MC phono stage generally needs approximately 20-30dB more gain than MM. The MM phonostage needs 40-43dB of gain. This is normally split between 2 stages BUT rarely one as to get an amplifier to amplify 43dB does not make good sense. Sometimes you'll find a 40dB gain cell / RIAA network/ 6dB gain cell/ buffer. So whoever said it - both are pretty much the same except for the extra 20-30dB extra gain the MC stage needs.
regards Rob
I'm a newbie here so Happy New year.
I've sort of been reading bits and pieces about buying from ebay etc.

Re: Vinyl/LP/Phono/Turntable Accessories Help!!
Someone wrote this and he said, there is a reason why people sell stuffs on ebay. There something wrong with it!
I believe not all as some are genuine seller. Like anything else, ebay is subject to abuse too and there are a lot of unscrupulous seller lurking at every corner. Just excercise the usual caution when dealing through ebay..
I do agree with regards to your MM/MC gain insights. Basicly thats what it is!
