I hope we managed to inspire our new friend to set up his 65th. Guess he will be occupied after getting his hands on the "Bible", a CD and a few spikes.

In conjunction with the public holiday on this week, we plan to have a Hi-Fi "pot luck" party this Thursday night featuring bookshelf speakers. The "pot luck" party will be held at Wembley. KEF, Rogers and the 65th have already confirmed their attendance.

Jo, are you bringing your 'FM Radio' for me to test before the 'pot luck' party kicks off?

For the interest of our 'local' 3/5a kakis-

Finally we had a listen with the 'new man', being driven partly by vintage gears, using our favorite CD spinner the 3010S2, it clearly shows that its fast on its feet with a 'new' tonality compared to our 'older folks'. It surprised the owner what he can achieve with or without some 'variables'. Also shows that the speakers can be a chameleon at times.
I think we should try a complete vintage setup to see if this is also true with the 'new man'.

We had too many iterations to play with last Thursday night but nevertheless managed to sample the main items. Now, we do not need to guess how they sound and what are their characters anymore.

A go with complete vintage setup? There is only one place to be.

I have to admit I was shocked to see our friend's shopping spree. There are still a few important things that he should obtain in order to set the right foundation for his system. Hope he can get what he is looking for and happy with all the toys that he managed to get. Guess the latest acquisition (as of last Thursday night ) will take some time to be ready before we can actually get a taste of it. Gotta indulge some other dishes while waiting for it.

That Denon turntable needs a decent vintage Denon DL103 cartridge!!

Is it a direct drive table??

More importantly Jedi, the question is, is it a decent TT? In time we know.
BTW, understand it is a DD.

Last Friday new venue, with a difference. Listening position requires one to be on the king size bed! Laying down is optional.....a bunch of guys....'playing equipment (kau gay)" bring a whole new meaning to errr.....never mind.

Guys, what cartridge is on that Denon turntable?

it's a DL-A100.

Ahhh... 100th Anniversary edition of the DL-103... supposed to be a super cart... need to check alignment on the TT though, apparently the cartridge head on that arm doesn't conform to Baerweld geometry for cart setup...

Do you have any info on what the effective mass on that tone arm might be??

We have made some adjustments after listening to it. It could have been better or more flexible if the gain is enough. It made me recall my old problem where the gain is actually too low.

Anyway, I think the owner is actually quite satisfied after some adjustments in the phono amp settings that night.

The last position is better than the previous attempts.

In the process, we also managed to find out the differences between the CD players. The American is definitely more dynamic compared to the Brit but the Brit sounds more neutral and occasionally can feel the background is more silent.

I think COS, we need to bring in the master to make speaker disappear!
If he can find the time to come over????? Not very far sum more.
As for the CDP, I always have a soft spot for the american. But its clearly temperamental compared to that of the brit.

Someone was thinking of coming down with The Master. He needs to tempt The Master for a day trip here.

The room coupling method is pretty effective too... it's in here somewhere on the forums...

...this speaker placement cd you speak well of, where might one who has an inclination on placing his speakers perfectly go to procure such a wondrous tool? Will this miracle work for planar or dipole speakers, or boxed ones only?

It is my desire to place my maggies as well as i can, as i detect some gremlins, namely low bass standing waves doing their nasty deed, and thus causing itchy-bekside syndrome to go buy something else. Itchy bekside syndrome is going to put me in the poor house one day.. so would appreciate some help here...

There's a few available. I bought the Isotek one from CenterCircle in TTDI. Good CD if you know what the principles are as it doesn't really explain how to use the CD... Kinda stupid for RM100 worth of test CD... But if you know the principles, it's a fine tool indeed.... No need to buy, I lend it to you...
