Re: Turntable Options - looking for an antidote
Spent a couple of hrs in amcorp mall this morning. LP galore it was.
Poorer by few hundred RM. Got a double disc 45 rpm Metallica Master of Puppets and a local band Black Dog Bone.
Now, if only I have a TT at home. Decision, decision.

Also remember to check out the Oracle Delphi V with SME 245 arm at Audio Image.
Am giving the Goldmund a miss as I was hoping that it came with the T3F Belt-driven automatic radial tonearm

Be careful with the antistatic gun as you may end up getting a brighter sound and much less crucial low mids.

Re: Turntable Options - looking for an antidote
Elhefe,
There is one EXTREMELY IMPORTANT RULE in LP buying. If you see something you like, BUY IT. IMMEDIATELY. You hesitate for one second and it can be gone. I learnt this the hard way in my younger days. Was at a record fair in the U.S. Got a stack of RCA Living Stereos. Just hesitated for a few seconds. Some dude said to me "excuse me, can I get in there for a sec". Next thing I know, he offered to buy the ENTIRE STACK. Just like that, a split second, and several tens of RCA Living Stereo LPs were gone.
So, this is not a joke. BUY BUY BUY !! It may not be there the next time you go !! Serious !!
Now, the same applies to the TT. Stop wasting time and just go get the Goldmund Studio la !! Compared to the RM23k M1, the Studio is dirt cheap !

Poison Angels that is .... hahahaha.
Next thing would be to acquire the tools of the trade to ensure that the analog always outperform any digital equivalent...
1. Get a good alignment gauge.
2. Get a good tracking force gauge. Shure SFG-2 is decent, but for the anally accuracy-freaks, there are those digital gauges that can also double up as a cocaine/heroine powder weighing machine.
3. Test record. Every vinyl afficionado is sure to have at least one such record. The HFNRR (hifi news & record review) test record is a popular one. Another populer one is "the ultimate analog test LP" from analogue productions. These helps you to fine-tune other parameters like channel balance (azimuth), VTA angle, and anti-skate compensation adjustments.
To borrow a phrase from a well known brand's cartridge installation manual, this section reads:
Once again:
Keep cool and concentrated when adjusting the cartridge. As a music lover you should have all adjustment accessories even if you think they are expensive or difficult to use. Damaged music reproduction or cartridge fault will never reproduce the one we love: music.

SJ,
Simple, get something with USB. Must be Async-USB. It is the next best thing to sliced bread.
Oh sorry, I forgot to talk about the music. For the music, you should get Papa Americano. Don't worry if you don't like it initially. Just give in to the trance. It will slowly but surely suck you in. I can hear it repeating again in my head now. And it is all your fault !

But seriously, I'd always felt 'Makin Movies' is a better album. The performance is more matured, with better guitar playing. Tunnel of Love is THE classic Dire Straits song. I can never get enough of the guitar solo towards the end of the song.

i'm gonna ask Centre Circle to set up a system whereby if solid state, the amp component ain't no more than 60w and with the cheapest 90db speakers they have...
...and i'm gonna bring along some records... Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Emmy Lou Harris, Neil Young, Coltrane and Miles Davis...

How lah? I learnt today that LP price is not standardised. Mcm suka hati saja the shops/owner put the price.

Prices of highly desired artists on LP's can be rediculous and silly now. Of course there's bargains to be found and entirely depending on what you may like to acquire. Like some nice specimens of the fairer sex, you want, many others oso want lah! The more people into this, the more people will fight to get what they want. The era of very cheap LP's era is long over.
